The Physical Demands of Pursuing an MBA MEMBA12

Written by oluremi ebuehi · 1 min read >

When we think of the MBA programme, the mental rigour usually takes the spotlight: late-night study sessions, strategic thinking, and countless presentations. While the  importance of the mental rigour cannot be understated, it comes with a set of  physical challenges that can catch you unawares. The physical demands are just as demanding, and depending on what spectrum you fall into on the healthy to unhealthy scale, it may take some time to master.  In these few weeks of the programme, I know first hand the difficult adjustments that must be made.

One of the immediate physical requirements right of the bat, is the sedentary nature of the programme. Hours spent in lectures, group meetings and personal study means you are seated for longer periods than you may be used to. It may take some time to get used to this new sitting culture. The prolonged seating time may cause some strain on your posture, especially if you didn’t have a good one to start with. More time in front of your computer means more screen time and this may cause a strain on your eyes. You must actively combat this by standing and walking around in between lectures and meetings; looking away from your screen as often as possible and generally being more physically active.

Combining the demands of an executive MBA programme with work means that you may need to sacrifice some sleep. Late nights studying  to meet school deadlines; or  to  keep abreast of your course work or to meet work deadlines becomes a new way of life and may lead to sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep exacts a physical toll on the body that may impact cognitive function, mood and overall health. MBA students may find themselves walking a tight rope to balance keeping up with their academic work and getting enough rest and sleep.

Giving your body the type of nutrition it needs, may also be impacted by the new fast paced and pressured world of the MBA. You have to rely more on caffeine and quick on-the-go meals for sustenance. There is either no time or very little time for proper meal planning and preparation. This means your body may not be getting all the nutrients it requires to function at its best.

The emotional and mental demands of an MBA programme can manifest physically. The additional stress, anxiety and the pressure to perform at a high level can manifest as headaches, muscle tension, insomnia and unexplained physical symptoms.

Finding the right balance between academic, work and personal well being is a continuous challenge. An MBA student will juggle work, academic and family responsibilities. The physical demand of maintaining a balance requires stamina, resilience and a commitment to personal care. The pursuit of an MBA is a physical marathon that demands endurance and self-awareness. An MBA student must address the physical demands by prioritising  mental and physical health. The importance of listening to your body and being intentional about self-care cannot be overemphasised. The physical demands are part of the transformative journey of the MBA.
