Being an Arsenal fan na suffer head

Written by Olasubomi Alli-Balogun · 2 min read >

Looking back at Arsenal from when Kanu Nwankwo played for the team, I was a huge fan of Arsenal just because of Kanu, having one of ours play for a team in Europe is a big step in his career, I was a big fan of Kanu so I liked Arsenal. I started watching football properly in 2009 but I watched the champions league final in 2006, I really wanted Arsenal to win that game, there were lots of controversies in that match, I felt they were cheated, Lehmann was given a red card because of a foul on Samuel Eto, I think a yellow card would have been appropriate, Barcelona exerted more pressure on Arsenal and later won the game.

Consequently, Arsenal had the reputation of playing beautiful football, known for their passing and co-operation in the field, I wonder why they have not won any major league since 2003/04, they were really brilliant in that season, winning the premier league unbeaten in all games, what changed after this season? They played well in every match, managed to qualify for the champions league consecutively for 14 years, they had quality players but their board of directors were only concerned about profit, they sold their best players, always buying players of less quality, focusing on building players from their academy was a good niche for the business but what about your loyalty to the fans, you owe them the responsibility of winning, making them happy but it seems they were less concerned about that.

Thierry Henry, Alex Song, Alexander Hleb, and Cesc Fabregas were sold to Barcelona, all players were at the peak of their careers but were sold, each of these players did not have a long career after this, or some did not play at top form for a long time. As a fan, most of the blame was put on the manager, Arsene Wenger, he was not spending enough during transfer season, he was not invested in players that were making a difference in Europe but looking at the difference when he left the club, I was actually surprised how he managed those calibers of played and still qualified for champions league every season.

In recent years, arsenal has changed 3 coaches since Arsene Wenger but are having the same issues they had before he was sacked, continued losses with a large margin, they lost to Chelsea by 6 to nothing in March 2014 and Manchester United by 8 to 2. Last season, Arsenal finished 8th on the league table, losing 13 matches out of 38, 7 draws and 18 wins, that is being broken 13 times in a season. Being an Arsenal fan has its mental challenge, the possibility of winning a match is low, I do not look forward to Arsenal playing any of the big 6 teams in the premier league, it is always a massacre. Dangote was heartbroken by the losses, he got tired and tried to buy the club just so he can make changes, it is annoying.

I probably would do a better job coaching Arsenal than any coach that they will employ, Arteta does not understand his job as a coach is, there are a lot of players that went out on loan this season that Arsenal could have grabbed, instead of buying Ben White for 50m, why not go for Demiral, Barcelona sent Pjanic out on loan, Sarabia also on loan to Sporting Lisbon, these could have been an addition to their squad and they are in top form, really impressive.

Is the fate of an Arsenal fan, just watching their games and support, no titles?

  1. Bro, I feel your pain.
My dad was also an Arsenal fan before he passed. Your perseverance and long-suffering are admirable. Don’t worry. If it’s any consolation, they beat Leicester 2-0 yesterday.

PS: Just drink one mountain man after every match, and you will feel better. Wahala no de finish.
