Recently we had a class on critical thinking. Critical thinking is said to be “the methods of logical inquiry and reasoning” (Glaser 1941); or like Mrs Yetunde said “Critical thinking is thinking about what you’re thinking in order to think better”
Personally, I think Critical thinking involves thorough observation, open mindedness, and cognitive reasoning. Considering this, I believe this ability is not practised by everyone and even if taught would still be ignored by most. Our society is used to certain beliefs either cultural or professional that it would be hard to change the mindset of most. Even those who are well educated- it would seem do not think critically.
While in this class, I realised that critical thinking is lost on a lot of people, I thought of the Judgemental mindset of some people, jungle justice practiced by some, etc. These things wouldn’t be happening or at least would be reduced if we practiced Critical thinking or at least not give into our emotions too often.
Emotions are not the only thing that make people lose logical analysis, sometimes it could be fear or unwillingness for change, self-interest, or plain stubbornness. It made me realise that I also fit into this school of thought, a lot of emotions, cultural and religious biases cloud my judgement most times and even when I’m aware, I still follow the status quo because sometimes I feel it’s safer.
The workplace is a typical example of where Critical thinking is essential. With its diversity in people and culture, it would be catastrophic if a self-serving bias decision is made, as it could cripple a business or bring about animosity within the organisation. It is therefore necessary for most employees especially managers trusted with company affairs to be independent and reflective of all their actions.
Aristotle said:” It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it”. It is therefore important that we train ourselves to really think and analyse situations before taking a stance on it as this is an important step to being great decision makers, which essentially is what we aim for if we desire to stand out amongst the crowd.
Please note that it’ll require stimulating constructive conflict, showing consideration and also bringing the decision into conclusion at the appropriate time. The process can be ambiguous as we should understand that we’ll never always get complete and unequivocal data to make informed decisions, therefore it is important to know that each process has its unique attributes, it might be trying but learning from them is essential.
With this in mind, I decided to take on an attitude and willingness for change and also try to logically analyse even the smallest details, from people, to personal choices and professional decisions. I believe this would help me gradually develop my mental and cognitive reasoning. Also, I ask my readers to do the same, to take a bold step in breaking the bias 😏 which I believe would help all of us be better as people.
So, who’s with me???
