2023 Elections: I need break.

2023 is just around the corner! You have probably been hearing this since 2019 but now it truly is around the corner. We are less than 12 months away from the scheduled elections and the familiar and unfamiliar faces have started their campaign gimmicks. Even the ‘cruise candidates’ started their race early this year. I, however, am here to enjoy the drama that is going to run from now till May 29 2023.

A great philosopher once said, “I can’t come and kill myself.” This is my slogan for the 2023 elections. Why? Amongst all the declared candidates and undeclared ones, not one of them has a credible case for why they should be elected president of Nigeria. The candidates that have the political will lack the moral standing, integrity and the heart for Nigeria. The candidates that have the moral standing, integrity and heart for the country, lack the political will and frankly, they have not done enough to win even a councillorship election.

I am particularly vexed by the intelligent minds with rich vocabulary, fine suits, with twitter active, trenches absent political parties, because for all their speeches and insightful solutions they can not get past the first hurdle. Win the election! THEY SIMPLY DO NOT DO ENOUGH! The candidate who is likely to win the 2023 election already started his preparation since 2019 or earlier. Even in the trenches they sing his praises. Yes, his praises. No female candidate as at today has done enough to make a contest of the 2023 presidential elections, talk more of winning. Only one has declared so far, and she wants an existing party to ignore all the party members and pick her. I digress. Our silver-tongued candidates have not even declared their intention to run yet. With the elections barely eleven months away, it is already late. If they have declared, I have not heard, and hence my point is re-emphasized. THEY DO NOT DO ENOUGH TO WIN!

At this point, most Nigerians not living under a rock, even those in Abeokuta, already know the two candidates with the highest chance of being the flag bearers for PDP and APC. Atiku for PDP and Tinunbu for APC. Personally, I would rather vote for a lump of coal, but as a great philosopher once said, “it is what it is”. So, we are stuck with these two. Bar a Trump-like emergence, these men will be the candidates for the two relevant parties in the 2023 elections and one of them will be president.

I do not want to sound like the herald of doom but the future of the country looks bleak considering the persons likely to move into power in the coming elections. I have tossed and turned in my bed thinking of 2023 elections and its potential impact on my life and I feel completely helpless. So, seeing as my beloved lump of coal too did not run for president I have settled for the inevitable and I console myself with the words of a renowned poet, “problem e no dey finish, make you try dey enjoy.”

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
