Growth Mindset VS Fixed Mindset

Written by Yagazie Eguare · 1 min read >

Today, i took the time to participate actively during the data analysis club class. One statement Dr Francis said that hasn’t left my mind was the analysis of the “Growth Mindset vs The Fixed Mindset” when it comes to learning programming.

He debunked so many myths i have unconsciously carried in my head that may or may not have contributed toward an unconscious belief system io have had about learning programs. So of these mindsets i’ve had were:

  • I am a Woman, coding is mostly for men and highly dominated by men.
  • i don’t have any background in computer science therefore i’m not cut up for it
  • I don’t have any time to commit to this.
  • I’m too old to start learning programming and coding….etc

However, when he shared about the 81-year-old woman who built an app at 85, that was it for me. I was completely sold on why i can’t afford to fail in data analysis.

At that point, my awareness of what i wanted was already heightened. All of a sudden, i realised that this was possible for me. If I put my mind to it….it will be my best subject. It occurred to me that I could make a thing out of this if I gave it my all. According to Dr France, all i need to do is practice for about 10-15 mins every day.

Today’s DA class not only helped me understand the beginner stage of using “R” but I was also inspired by how much of an Excellent teacher Mr Frances is. His systematic way of teaching made it easy for everyone to be carried along and most importantly understand the languages.

After class, I went back to reflect on the kind of mindset I have. I have always seen myself as having a growth mindset but that incident made me question what I had believed to be true.
