Emotional Intelligence: The Superpower You Didn’t Know You Had

Written by Yemi Alesh · 1 min read >

Emotional intelligence (EQ) – it sounds like something a superhero would possess, right? Well, buckle up, because in the everyday world, EQ is indeed a superpower that can transform your interactions, boost your career, and maybe even save the day (or at least the office meeting).

What Is Emotional Intelligence?

Imagine a blend of Wonder Woman’s empathy and Tony Stark’s intelligence, (don’t mind me, I haven’t seen a movie since I started class), That’s emotional intelligence! It’s the ability to understand and manage your emotions while also recognizing and influencing the feelings of those around you. Researchers John Mayer and Peter Salovey coined the term in 1990, but it was psychologist Daniel Goleman who made it as popular as a catchy tune you can’t get out of your head.

Why EQ Matters

So, why should you care about EQ? Well, my friend, it’s the secret sauce that makes you a workplace rockstar. EQ is the backstage pass to leadership greatness. Here’s why:

  1. The Art of Team Whispering: EQ helps you decode the cryptic language of your colleagues. When Adeniran from Accounting looks like he’s about to explode, you’ll know it’s not because of that missing pen. You’ll approach him with empathy, diffuse the situation, and maybe even find the pen.
  2. Stress Management: Picture this: deadlines, angry clients, and a malfunctioning printer. Your EQ kicks in, and you remain calm. You don’t smash the printer; instead, you take a deep breath and tackle the chaos with grace.
  3. Feedback: Giving feedback is like juggling flaming torches. With EQ, you deliver constructive criticism without bruising egos. Your co-workers appreciate it.

Major EQ traits (Interpersonal)

  • Be calm under pressure. i.e. ability to maintain composure and focus even in stressful or intense situations. Have high stress tolerance.
  • Be empathic – ability to imagine how someone else feels. When you’re empathic, you can step into someone else’s emotional shoes and understand their experiences and needs.
  • Be open – be willing to consider other perspectives or to try out new experiences.
  • Be an effective communicator – communicate clearly, concisely and with focus.
  • Be assertive – behave confidently and directly express your wants, beliefs, and feelings.
  • Be non-judgmental – avoid the urge to judge people.

Major EQ traits (Intrapersonal)

  • Self-awareness
  • Self confidence
  • Emotional self-control
  • Patience
  • Ability to control impulse behavior
  • A passion to succeed despite the challenges
  • Internal locus of control – take responsibility.

Signs You Might Need an EQ Boost

  • Emotional hijacking
  • Depression
  • Incivility
  • Stress
  • Drug Abuse
  • Eating disorder
  • Anger management
  • Prone to violence

7 ways to level up your EQ

  • Keep your stress level under control.
  • Develop emotional agility i.e. not denying all the emotions.
  • Get more sleep.
  • Create time for sports.
  • Anger management – keep quiet, meditate or sing a song.
  • Effective communication – pay attention to body language.
  • Develop a consciousness of gratitude – count your blessings.

So, my fellow EQ adventurers, embrace your emotional intelligence. It’s not just a buzzword; it’s your cape, your shield, and your secret handshake. Use it wisely.

Remember, EQ isn’t just about being smart; it’s about being emotionally savvy.

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
