THE FUTURES WHEEL – THERE IS NO ELEVATOR TO SUCCESS

Written by Olayemi Idris · 1 min read >

As we journey toward success, in a world that often seeks instant gratification, the realization hits hard that there usually is no swift elevator ride to the top as it is quite important to recognize and embrace the hard work, challenges, and struggles that are demanded by the metaphorical staircase that paves way to the ultimate achievement and or decision.

The phrase “There is no elevator to success, you always have to take the stairs” ran through my mind as Professor Anibaba introduced the Futures Wheel concept. It depicted that each process step required some level of thinking, effort, dedication, and persistence. Although, the futures wheel is a visual brainstorming and mind-mapping tool used to explore the potential consequences and impacts of a specific decision or idea that aids in the comprehension and analysis of various factors that may result from any particular action, the concept of “no elevator to success” underscores the importance of considering the diverse facets of the journey.

A very important aspect of this phrase, is the value of the climb itself. The journey shapes the individual, fostering personal and professional growth. And each step is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and develop the skills needed to reach new heights. Success isn’t just about reaching the top, it’s about becoming the person capable of staying there as there are no shortcuts or quick fixes. It’s a gradual climb, demanding hard work, resilience, and a willingness to face challenges head-on. Resilience becomes the key to persistently climbing the stairs, even when the path seems steep and daunting.

The absence of an elevator symbolizes the lack of a direct, effortless route to success. As the futures wheel unfolds, it illustrates the intricate web of factors contributing to one’s achievements. These factors may include perseverance, setbacks, learning experiences, and personal growth, all interconnected and influencing the road toward success. The Futures Wheel can be visualized as a representation of the multifaceted journey toward success. The central idea, “success,” serves as the focal point, and each node represents different elements, challenges, and steps along the way.

Consequently, both the futures wheel and the phrase “no elevator to success” emphasize the depth and complexity of the journey. They encourage a holistic perspective, recognizing that success is an evolving process, shaped by various factors that demand thoughtful consideration and strategic planning.

My experience and learnings at the LBS program have reinforced and re-etched some basic concepts into my memory. Grappling with the challenges of an executive MBA program and the rigorous journey of attaining corporate heights ( career advancement) has made me realize that it requires resilience, continuous learning, and the ability to adapt to the evolving landscape. The embodiment of the journey of climbing the stairs, networking, teamwork, leadership development, and application of knowledge at each step is a test for competence and an opportunity for growth.

Ultimately, Success is a continuous journey and the stairs we climb today pave the way for the heights we will reach tomorrow. Also, reaching the summit of success is not just about personal achievements but grasping the importance of impacting others by fostering a culture of success every step of the way.
