Surprises and Struggles

Written by Levon Aghimien · 2 min read >

Learning and the pursuit of knowledge have always been at the core of my ambitions, a pathway toward personal and professional growth. To fulfill this desire, I embarked on the journey of pursuing an MBA at Lagos Business School. Little did I know that this undertaking would be a whirlwind of surprises and struggles, reshaping my perception of education and self-improvement.

When I first started the MBA program, the intricacies of the program, coupled with the unfamiliarity of its processes, left me with a limited understanding of how everything would unfold. The initial lack of clarity made it difficult to grasp the complexities of the coursework and the program’s overall trajectory. However, as time has progressed, I have gradually become more accustomed to the program’s dynamics. The channels of communication have become more apparent, and my understanding of the course structure and expectations has significantly improved.

Firstly, I had pictured myself as a blank slate, devoid of any preconceptions and open to learning. But the MBA program requires a level of independence and skill that I had not fully expected, so reality struck me hard.  I had believed that attending lectures and following the outlined guidelines would suffice. I was in for a rude awakening. It quickly became apparent that active participation was not just encouraged but expected. I need to be prepared for every class. Regardless of how simple or clear the subject matter might appear, asking questions, challenging assumptions, and engaging in discussions are all crucial components of a student’s learning process to succeed in the program.

Initially, when I enrolled in the program, I had not anticipated the significant role that group work would play, given the online nature of the coursework. My preconceived assumptions were aligned with a more individualized learning experience. However, to my surprise, the program incorporated a substantial amount of collaborative group work, fostering a dynamic and interactive learning environment. The combination of group projects and an online environment created a different kind of challenge that I had not anticipated. Nevertheless, this unexpected element has proven to be instrumental in broadening my perspective, enhancing my teamwork skills, and providing a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. It has been a valuable and enriching aspect of the program that has contributed to my overall learning experience, even though it has its own set of difficulties.

Admitting my shortcomings is never easy, but I must acknowledge that there was a part of me that had underestimated the demands of the MBA program. It seems like there is a constant scramble to prove one’s worth, to showcase a unique perspective, and to stand out in a crowd of talented individuals.
Everything about this journey feels unorthodox to me. The rules of the game are different, and I am struggling to adapt. However, I remain hopeful and resilient. I understand that this MBA program is a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth, and the difficulties I encounter now will help me succeed in the future.

Amid these surprises and struggles, I have come to realize that learning is not a passive process. It is an active journey that demands dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to step out of one’s comfort zone. The MBA program has taught me that true learning occurs when you are open to change, eager to challenge your own assumptions, and ready to embrace the unexpected. I look forward to seeing how my perspective changes and how these challenges shape me into a more competent and flexible professional as I continue on this journey of   transformation.
The MBA journey is far from over, and I am excited to see what other surprises and challenges await me. With an open mind, a commitment to growth, and a belief in my ability to overcome obstacles, I am looking forward to the best this journey has to offer.

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
