Tales about Navigating LBS and Earning an MBA. (Photo credit: Getty Images)
In October 2023, I received news that I had been accepted into the prestigious Lagos Business School (“LBS“). Fantastic news, right? Well, it ordinarily would have been if only I was resuming in January 2024 like I had planned.
Here’s some context: I am a lawyer, one of those types of lawyers who believe that they can change the world but not by spending precious time in the courtroom but by doing things that have national economic implications. So naturally, I decided to pursue an MBA as opposed to the traditional LLM (Master of Laws degree) because I wanted to be equipped with both the knowledge and skills required to efficiently realize my short-, medium- and long-term goals.
But I just recently had a baby.
While pursuing my career and educational objectives was a priority, combining that with the demands of being a new mom would have been too hectic, so I decided to push MBA out but not too further out – January 2024 seemed ideal.
When I got notification of some brush up classes, I had assumed it was for those commencing in October, as such I did not attend all the sessions due to the demands of both my job and family. Besides, I expected I would have another shot before I began classes in January (little did I know).
On the day I would receive the admission letter, I had spoken to a few admissions officers at LBS and so I knew the letter was coming. But nothing prepares you for the life that comes after your admission into LBS.
The letter had said classes would commence on October 23, 2023, but nothing was said of where it was happening, so, I missed almost an entire week of classes because I was yet to set up my official LBS mails and so, did not have access to the timetable.
When I finally gained access, I was met with courses that were strange to me and a learning structure that was “off brand”. I would normally not speak in class but now, not only did I have to speak in class, I had to actively participate if I was going to graduate with excellent grades. We also discuss cases but not the type I was used to.
It does seem like a lot.
I am still trying to figure out how to navigate the e-learn platform and catch up with everything that I had missed while also preparing for the classes ahead.
Oh, by the way, forget what I said before, I am incredibly thrilled to be studying at one of the foremost business schools in Africa. My choice of LBS was birthed out of the desire to obtain world class education at a reasonably priced rate while also engaging with top minds and talents. I would say, so far, so good. My cohort is full of promising leaders, some of which are already experts in their respective fields.
Well, this is my MBA journey, and it looks like it is going to be one very interesting ride.
See you at Entry 2!
