Navigating Life’s Crossroads with the Right Decisions

Written by Galbina Iketubosin · 2 min read >

As individuals, we make decisions every second, from what to eat for breakfast to choosing a career path. From the simplest to the most complex decisions. Decisions shape our lives, and the outcome depends on how we make them. Attending my first Analysis of Business Problems (ABP) class at the Lagos Business School (LBS) Modular Executive MBA12, with Dr. Anibaba as the Faculty Member, made me realize that applying the course’s learnings to my everyday choices could greatly improve the quality and outcome of my decisions.

The process of making decisions can often be complex and overwhelming. To navigate life’s crossroads effectively, it’s essential to develop a systematic approach to decision-making. In this blog post, I’ll share some of my learnings from class on a structured process of decision-making that can help you make better decisions in various aspects of your life.

Understand the Situation/Business Dynamics

The first step in making informed decisions is to understand the context in which you’re operating. Whether you’re dealing with a personal dilemma or a business problem, take the time to gather information, assess the current situation, and understand the dynamics at play. This step is all about developing a comprehensive view of the issues, challenges, and opportunities involved.

Define the Decision Problem

Once you have a clear understanding of the situation, define the decision problem concisely. This step involves asking questions like “What needs to be decided?” and “What are the specific issues that need to be addressed?” A well-defined problem statement serves as the foundation for the decision-making process.

Be Guided by Objectives

Decisions should align with specific objectives or goals. Consider what you’re trying to achieve with your decision. What outcomes are you aiming for? By having well-defined objectives, you ensure that your decision-making process is purpose-driven and that you are working toward a specific outcome.

Brainstorm on Alternatives

With your objectives in mind, start brainstorming potential solutions or alternatives. Don’t limit yourself at this stage; allow creativity to flow. Generate as many options as possible, even those that may seem far-fetched initially. The goal is to explore all possibilities.

Develop Criteria

To evaluate your alternatives effectively, you need to establish criteria that will help you assess their merits. Criteria are the standards or attributes that are essential for your decision. Think about what factors matter most and why. These criteria will become your measuring stick when evaluating alternatives.

Evaluate Alternatives Against Criteria

Now, it’s time to compare your alternatives against the established criteria. This involves a systematic and objective assessment of each option’s strengths and weaknesses. You can use various decision-making tools like decision matrices, SWOT analysis, or cost-benefit analysis to aid in this evaluation.

Take a Decision

Based on the evaluation, choose the alternative that best aligns with your objectives and meets the established criteria. While it’s essential to consider all relevant information, don’t fall into the trap of analysis paralysis. Make a decision, even if it’s not perfect. Indecision can be just as detrimental as a poor choice.

Develop an Action Plan

Once you’ve made your decision, it’s time to develop an action plan. This plan outlines the steps required to implement your decision effectively. Consider what resources are needed, who will be involved, and establish a timeline. Clarity in your action plan will help ensure a smooth transition from decision to execution.

Conclusion

A systematic approach to decision-making ensures that you make well-informed, purpose-driven choices that align with your goals. By following these eight steps – understanding the situation, defining the problem, setting clear objectives, brainstorming alternatives, establishing criteria, evaluating alternatives, making a decision, and creating an action plan – you can navigate the decision-making process with confidence and achieve the best possible outcomes. So, next time you face a complex decision, don’t rush; take a systematic approach to make the right call. #MEMBA12
