Challenges in Public Speaking

Written by Onyinye Ezeugbor · 50 sec read >

Public speaking involves speaking in person to a audience. Based on research and observation, here are three common challenges that people face with public speaking:

Fear of public speaking: The fear of public speaking, also known as glossophobia, is one of the most common challenges people face when it comes to speaking in public. It is a fear of being judged, criticized or rejected by the audience, which can lead to nervousness, anxiety, and even panic. The fear of public speaking can be overcome with practice, preparation, and experience.

Lack of confidence: Even those who are not necessarily afraid of public speaking may struggle with a lack of confidence. They may feel like they are not qualified enough to speak on a particular topic or that they are not skilled enough to hold the audience’s attention. To overcome this challenge, it is essential to focus on one’s strengths and expertise, practice and rehearse, and use positive self-talk to build confidence.

Poor delivery: Another common challenge people face when speaking in public is poor delivery. This could mean speaking too quickly, using too many filler words like “um” and “ah,” or having a monotone voice. Poor delivery can make it difficult for the audience to understand and engage with the speaker. To improve delivery, one can practice speaking slowly and clearly, use pauses effectively, and vary tone and pitch to keep the audience engaged.
