CFA Class Experience

Written by Mayowa Balogun · 58 sec read >

Personally, it’s been a bit tough for me. I’ve tried to take accounting classes in the past because I know the value accounting knowledge adds to the overall skillset. For someone like me who likes to analyze basic numbers and is comfortable with numbers generally, it should be a lot more fun, but the combination of a Microsoft excel deficiency (and apathy, to be honest) has hampered me, along with the fact that accounting seems to defy basic conventional wisdom.

Both Prof Owolabi and Prof Ojiabo are excellent instructors, the classes are fun as is the capstone project, since it’s more practical. Having to use some of these accounting concepts, like liquidity and efficiency ratios in real time analysis of real time companies makes it a lot more relatable as opposed to the sometimes abstract application of concepts which starts to feel like we are back in secondary school again.

Obviously, in an accounting class, the specific concepts and formulas will be what will be tested in an exam, as opposed to how we can use any and all of those concepts to really analyze the financial health of companies (which is what the ultimate goal of the learning is).

These are just my personal thoughts, I guess I just am happy understanding the concepts and being able to reference them in day to day analysis or in a more serious capacity as a consultant as opposed to kind of chasing a grade.

Little by little though, I’m learning to embrace the concepts and the boot camp of a first semester has been. Good luck to me.
