Lagos; The city of Excellence and Chaos

Written by David Adoghe · 1 min read >

Lagos has been dubbed the city of opportunities, a small state that makes more money than other states. Bounded to the south by the bight of Benin, to the west by the republic of Benin, to the northwest, Ogun state. Being a former capital state, it boasts of the economic powers and wealth, with major offices resident in the state.

Lagos is a multi-faceted city with a diverse population from around the country, and being an economic hub in Nigeria, it hosts other nationals. It serves as the live wire of Nigeria as it has an electrifying nightlife and fun spots. The coastal line has several attractions ranging from the sandy beaches along the coast to the nature conservation centres, amusement parks and lots more.

Despite the economic wealth seen in the state, there is a great disparity in the distribution of this wealth, visible in the placement of the towns within the state.  The city is plagued by a myriad of issues from environmental pollution and the mighty traffic that characterizes how fragile the city’s transportation is.

Lagos is home to many startups, drawn to the city by the large population of young people who have migrated from various parts of the country to reside here. To many, Lagos is a city of both opportunities and chaos, evident in the swift development that has rocked the state. These opportunities are present in both the various industries located within the state and the massive population that calls Lagos home.

In spite of the progress seen in the development of the city, it still struggles to provide necessities needed for commuting within the city and remote towns are left out in the development. The city is ranked to be one of the worst places to live worldwide due to a number of reasons. From a personal perspective, there have been significant challenges in waste disposal, inadequate structural development of private properties and insufficient police system to cover crime hotspots in the city, amongst other issues.

Despite the burgeoning displeasure present in the city, it hosts a lively group of people, warm to visitors and home to various local delicacies brought by the fortune seekers. The city has produced renowned personalities in politics, governance, health, and education. Being the epicentre during the pandemic outburst, its health system wasn’t stretched to its knees as the state’s minister of health and other front line workers worked vigorously to curtail the spread.

The above and other unnamed successes makes me pride in the people who live here, especially those who seeks the good for their host communities, setting a standard for others to follow.

My favourite places in Lagos are the local communities that allow direct interaction with the locals and those who emigrated from their states of origin. I believe the state has more to offer than what meets the eye.

Come, visit the land of excellence and experience the Lagosian way of life!
