How far can you go alone?

Written by Toro-Obong Udoh · 1 min read >

It is written in Luke 14:28-30; For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying, “This man began to build, and was not able to finish.”

While estimating the amount of work required to successfully scale the MBA program; I had failed to consider the fact that we would be bonded in groups. I foresaw enormous stress levels and had my consolation with energy drinks. However, we were placed in groups and I must say my group members are the best.

In the last class, we had to discuss a case together and make a presentation. A lot of calculation was involved as well as case structuring. Can you imagine doing it alone? No wonder it is popularly said, “If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.” We worked together till roughly 22:00 hours. It was a moment of sweet pain. We all despite our tight and tired day to discuss and plan for the next day. Varied thoughts were analyzed and we finalized the nature and frame for our answers I have settled with their responsibility of producing the PowerPoint slides as well as making the presentation in class.

Here we are in class and the lecturer slams us with a surprise. She will be picking those to make the presentation herself. What? After all the preparations I put into this? I was not happy with this but I had a lot of faith in my group members. They would not fall my hands.

As the class commenced, group one took the spotlight, and bring accurate perspectives to the case. Group three followed and kept the class well-engaged. Group two had the floor and sustained at the same pace. My group, group four was next and I hoped we would do well. When it was our turn, our group leader was invited to take the stage and I relaxed knowing that all would go well. Due to time constraints, we were not able to complete our presentation but I believe our presentation made an impact.

Now, what is our take-home? First, understand the unique value of people. In our group meeting, while we analyzed the case together, valued insights were shared. I could never have thought of them myself. That value was obtained because we came together. Second, do not think the world revolves around you. While our group leader was presenting, she did it with poise better than I could have done despite my being the author. Finally, when in a group, learn as much as you can. One of my group members taught me a valuable lesson in Christianity. He taught me about Lordship matters – to what extent is Jesus, Lord over you?

Do not go about your daily life alone. Experience the beauty of living with people. One thing is sure, none of us will leave mother earth alive.
