A survey was conducted using the curriculum vitae of 12 job seekers,11 out of 12 stated that their strength was being a team player. We grouped them and gave them a task to figure out. We noticed that they could not come up with a solution as each of them wanted things to be done their own way. Somewhere out of selfish reason, egocentric and poor communication.
We realized that their CVs were totally different from their personalities. For co-existence in every environment, there is a need to acquire the skill of team building as we need ourselves to succeed.
What is a team? It is a group of people with a variety of strong complementary skills and expertise, pursuing a common purpose and collectively achieving more, than the sum of individual achievements. Every team is a group of people, but it is not every group of people that is a team. For a team to stand, it must have a common purpose, must be innovative, there must be synergy, and enable the best of the members as each member ignites the success of others.
We can see an example of a good team from a team of footballers, who play for the collective goal of their club and that is why you see the whole team ranging from the defense to the midfielder working to enable the striker to score the goal. If one person chooses to be selfish without making the right passes the team loses.
Challenges arise in a team and that is because of Diversity.
Diversity in a team can present both opportunities and challenges for team building. On the one hand, a diverse team can bring a variety of perspectives, skills, and experiences to the table, which can lead to more innovative and creative solutions to problems. However, diversity can also create challenges for team building, particularly if team members have different cultural backgrounds, communication styles, or ways of working.
One of the biggest challenges of diversity on a team is communication. Team members may come from different cultural backgrounds and may have different communication styles and norms. This can lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and conflict. If team members are not aware of these differences and do not take steps to accommodate them. For example, some team members may prefer direct communication, while others may prefer indirect communication or may value harmony and avoiding conflict.
Another challenge of diversity on a team is managing different expectations and ways of working. Team members may have different work styles, priorities, and goals, which can lead to tension and conflict if not addressed. For example, some team members may prefer to work independently, while others may prefer to collaborate closely with others. Some team members may value speed and efficiency, while others may prioritize thoroughness and attention to detail.
To overcome these challenges, it is important for team members to build trust and understanding with one another. This can be done by taking the time to learn about each other’s backgrounds, communication styles, and work preferences. Team members should also be willing to be flexible and adapt to each other’s needs, while also being clear about their own needs and expectations. Effective communication, active listening, cultural intelligence, emotional intelligence, and regular check-ins can also help to build trust and prevent misunderstandings.
Overall, while diversity can present challenges for team building, it can also lead to more creative and innovative solutions if managed effectively. By building trust, understanding, and open communication, diverse teams can leverage their differences to achieve their goals and succeed together.
