Culture shock: In an organization and how to deal with it.

Written by Stellamaris okebu · 1 min read >

Joining my current organization in 2021, I experienced what we call culture shock. For me, it was a culture deviating from what I have always known.

Culture shock is a feeling of disorientation and discomfort that one experiences when encountering a culture that is significantly different from one’s own. I remember instances where I felt anxiety, frustration and confusion in some instances and a longing for familiarity with what I have always known.

With the advent of remote working, there were days I felt isolated, had difficulty in communicating and a sense of disconnect from my identity and culture.

One thing I learnt in the process was to keep an open mind and curious about the new environment I was in. This greatly helped to alleviate feelings of confusion and disorientation. In addition, I started to connect with other people who were experiencing similar feelings and seeking out support from other professionals.

Other coping mechanisms in adopted and for anyone experiencing this can try the below that worked for me:

  • Take time to observe and learn about the organization. Remember to pay attention to how people communicate, interact with each other, and approach their work.
  • Seek guidance from colleagues who have been with the organization for a while. Ask for their insights and tips on how to navigate the cultural differences.
  • Be open and flexible to new ideas and approaches. Embrace the differences and try to adapt to the new culture
  • Communicate, communicate, Communicate. This cannot be over emphasized. Communicate with your colleagues and managers. Let them know if you are experiencing any difficulties adjusting to the new culture. They may be able to provide additional support and guidance.
  • Take care of yourself and try to maintain a work-life balance. Engage in activities outside of work that bring you comfort and a sense of familiarity.
  • Attend cultural events or activities that are organized by the organization. This will give you an opportunity to learn more about the culture and connect with colleagues

Finally, by taking these steps you can help yourself adjust to the new culture and feel more comfortable in the organization.
