It is so amazing how we mostly overlook things that we consider to be basic only to discover that they have become so significant and now becoming a major force to reckon with in our lives. People have left their writing skills to change over a long period of time only to discover that they now struggle whenever they are tasked with writing assignments or duties.
You cannot shy away from the responsibilities of writing as a tool of communication. Speaking is great and yes; we do a lot of it every day. However, writing is very essential in our professional and social activities to experience growth and achieve desirable success.
Spelling Issues
The computer has been a huge source of blessing, however today I discovered in my Management Communication class that auto-spelling checks and corrections offered by most word processing applications have made our minds lazy to memorize spellings correctly. We now rely on these systems at an alarming rate that we cannot even take time and conscious efforts to learn simple correct spellings
Punctuation Issues
I also discovered during my management communication lectures that punctuation is a big deal when it comes to correctly written pieces. You mostly wonder how people struggle to understand your emails, memos, and letters after you have spent long hours putting them together. You might have just spent those times writing long uncoordinated and unstructured sentences that cannot be easily pieced together.
Next time, if you may just pay good attention to your punctuation, you might be able to make sentences that carry more precision and meaningful messages across to your intended audience.
Creativity Issues
Most individuals now write and rely heavily on the power of copy and paste to flesh out their thoughts. Most people cannot form sentences without even looking for other finished works on the internet to not just complement their thoughts but to have the other write-ups lifted and dropped on their written pieces. This has made us lazier in our minds to the point that we are less creative and cannot develop more innovative ways of communicating our thoughts to our readers.
It takes Efforts
In the end, it takes great effort to be great at anything. We discovered that it takes deliberate conscious efforts to make things right. You cannot just allow things to continue on auto-pilot and expect completely different outcomes. You must be ready to read books on spelling, pronunciation, punctuation, and other essential materials that will enhance your writing skills. You must also be dedicated to reading literature and quality materials that will enhance your vocabulary. These are all for your benefit and to enhance your ability to communicate at all levels, and with anyone across many contexts and geographical spaces.
Simple steps to take in improving your vocabulary:
- Study better
- Take up writing tasks as often as possible
- Borrow a second pair of eyes for your written pieces before you send them out
- Ensure you read your written pieces for noticeable improvements from your last versions
- Enjoy the growth process.
