Starting the MBA program in January of this year, nothing prepared me for what I have experienced in the first three months. On inception, I believed I would have been able to manage my time between working, schooling, and parenting. Reflecting on the learnings and experiences I have had so far; it has taught me the importance of planning my time and every other thing I must do.
I have learnt how to effectively make use of my calendar and put in all activities I have for each day from cooking, working out, reading my mails, attending meeting, attending classes, reading, and even completing my assignments on time. This phase has brought out a new side of me I never knew existed and has improved my efficiency in my daily life.
Graduating over 10years ago, I would say adult education is not for the faint hearted. I am unlearning old habits and learning new things each day. Also, I am learning to challenge my thinking and critically think through situations while ensuring I have no bias while reviewing any situation I am faced with. Analysis for business has taught me this and I have recently implemented this is a tough situation at work.
As a finance professional, I have a deep appreciation on how corporate financial accounting is simplified and how to properly interpret financial information or decision making. As an accountant, we are trained to prepare financial reports, bookkeeping and ensuring the integrity of the financials of a company. The most important learning on this course is the understanding of proper interpretation of the financials of a company and ensure that when preparing this report, we ensure that the users of this reports properly interpret the financials we prepare which guide them in making an informed decision.
Over the years and from my days as a consultant, excel has been a work tool which I have mastered the use. As I have grown in my career over the years, I have become less hands on thereby limiting the everyday use of excel. Also, working in an environment where almost all processes are highly automated, the dependence on excel for reports has been eliminated. Data analytics has brought back the use of excel and the formulas, use of excel in building reports which I have lost touch with is being restored gradually. Other learnings in data analytic is the understanding of probability and decision tree analysis and how i can apply it in my everyday life.
Until next time, happy reading.
