Elections – Emotions & Frictions.

Written by Gbolahan Aina · 1 min read >

Emotions have been high following the conclusion of the presidential election that was held on the 25th of February, 2023. For the very first time, youth participation and involvement were at an unprecedented level. This is impressive and speaks to the change that we desire where the youths know that their voice and votes count. Many Nigerians were hoping this election will usher in their candidate and this is expected to bring about the much-needed change.  Unfortunately, there can only be one president which implies some candidates will lose at the end of the day. No one loves to be on the losing side. Sometimes it’s due to ego, other times it can be because of the love for their candidate or hatred for the opponents. An attendant effect of this election has been some supporters being verbally abusive to friends, family, and foes. Some have also cut ties with loved ones due to differences in political leanings.

I listened with bewilderment to someone that was boasting about how he disowned some friends and family members due to conflicting views. Speaking passionately, he claims the election has revealed the true character of these people and he can’t keep them in his corner anymore. This person is not an outlier but represents how some people have handled relationships. Interesting to note that some of these relationships date as far back as thirty years, but sadly this is now being sacrificed on the altar of elections.

There have also been several tweets about people ostracizing or refusing to fund the expenses of family members due to opposing political affiliations. I remember a piece of news that went viral during the 2019 general elections when a wife accidentally murdered her husband during an argument as they belonged to different political parties. Thankfully, there has been no record of death from arguments but if words could kill, the political casualties this year would have been innumerable.

I know words hurt and people feel betrayed but one should never make a lifetime decision based on an event. This election cycle will soon be over and some people might not have that shoulder to lean on again as they have cut family ties. In my honest opinion, I think this is unnecessary and it’s okay to disagree to agree. Not wise to throw away friendships and relationships because people don’t share one’s views or perspectives. People see things from different perspectives based on background, knowledge, experiences, and expectations. A divergent view doesn’t imply selfishness and wickedness. sadly, some people have interpreted divergent views as an enemy of their personal well-being.

Our strength as a nation is our diversity and we must ensure we remain united. We must give allowance for people’s flaws and be ready to forgive mistakes. Friends and families are all we have got and this shouldn’t be thrashed because of political differences. Personally, I have as a principle not to put my emotions or trust in things I can’t individually dictate the outcome for my personal sanity. Let Nigeria remain the goal as we foster stronger relationships with family and friends.
