NAVIGATING THE COMPLEXITIES OF HUMAN EXISTENCE

Written by Emurohwo Diemesor · 1 min read >

We as humans are complex creatures with a distinct sets of qualities. These qualities such as rationality and freedom, are the ones that differentiate us from other creatures.

Come along as we explore our nature as rational and free creatures, as well as our identity as living and social beings, what our virtues are, and what makes us proud.

As noted earlier, one of the qualities that separate us from other living creatures is rationality. It is the ability to reason, think critically, and use one’s mind to comprehend the world around us. Unlike animals, it has been proven that we can think abstractly and make decisions based on logic rather than natural inclination. This feature has helped us accomplish remarkable feats, such as inventing electricity and travelling to other planets. It is crucial to remember, however, that we are not always rational. Moods, perceptions, and other variables can impair our judgement and cause us to end up making irrational decisions.

Another essential human characteristic is liberty. It is the ability to act independently, make decisions, and shape our future. We as humans can be self-aware and shape our lives according to our goals and desires, this is something other animals cannot do. Of course, this freedom is not definitive. External factors such as rules, cultural norms, and physical conditions frequently limit our options. Nonetheless, the ability to choose and act freely is a crucial part of a person’s identity.

Humans are part of the natural environment. Birth, growth, reproduction, and death are all controlled by the same biological laws that control all other living things, mostly mammals. Our unique capacity for reasoning and freedom, on the other hand, allows us to supersede these inborn traits to some extent. We can, for example, develop technology to extend our lives or use clinical interventions to improve our physical strength.

As complex as we are as human beings, we are also social animals. We live in communities, form relationships, and rely on one another for human connection and support. This social aspect of human life has enabled us to accomplish significant things, from the building of houses and other structures to the creation of the political system of government. A negative side to being social is that our exposure can result in rivalry and competition as various individuals and groups fight tooth and nail for resources and influence.

Our virtues are the features that define our sense of morality. These include qualities like bravery, sincerity, sympathy, and equality. For us to flourish easily, we need to be morally inclined, because morals allow us to live in harmony with ourselves and with others. We would be unable to build trust, form relationships, or act in ways that benefit ourselves and our communities if we are not morally inclined. Conclusively, our pride is also another factor that makes it easy to distinguish us from all other creatures. This dignity is founded on our logical reasoning and freedom, which allow us to make decisions, act responsibly, and strive for excellence. Pride is also derived from the fact that we are good people capable of appreciating the worth of other beings and treating them with dignity. And this requires us to treat one another with benevolence and equity and to strive for a world in which all humans can thrive.

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
