WILL MAKING SMART CHOICES EVER RULE THE WORLD?

Written by Emurohwo Diemesor · 1 min read >

How many times have you regretted your choices? Many of us tend to second-guess ourselves, and this leads to confusion and passivity later in life.

Even if the choices we make as humans are insubstantial. These choices are, in one way, responsible for shaping our lives.

Some people do not care whether the decision they make at the end of the day is smart or not. This is because some of these decision-makers are under pressure from people higher up and sometimes it’s because they aren’t smart enough.

As an example, suppose your coworkers know you as not only an early riser but also a very smart person at work. But you couldn’t fight it on this particular Monday morning. So you’ve woken up an hour and a half after your last alarm, and you’re still trying to make breakfast as usual. After waking up so late, the best option is usually cereal, so you can keep being the earliest comer. But you went ahead and made Amala or Garri with the soup you made the night before. Now, not only do you not get to work hours after others have resumed, but you also end up dozing off most of the time. This way, nullifying the way your coworkers have always looked at you over the years of working with them.

Humans make logical decisions at times, but we also let our emotions get in the way of the choices we’re to make.

If you look at your phone one day and think, “This is no way to live, with a phone that’s mostly destroyed.” But then you remember how empty your bank account is and how the loans are already piling up. Now, you recall your distant aunt, who always told you to come to her if you needed anything. The smartest choice to make is to pick up this raggedy-looking phone and call your aunt to see if she can assist you. But, if you allow your emotions to take over, you begin to think of a lot of things. These thoughts end up becoming roadblocks to the wise decision you should have made. So, instead of calling your aunt for a new phone, you end up taking out another loan to get a new one. Now, guess who’s swallowed up in debt?

Assume you are always late for work, and your boss questions you every week. Then, you remember that a neighbor has once volunteered to drop you off at your office every day. Once you’ve cleared out the possibilities of this person probably wanting to kidnap you. What’s the smartest choice to make at this point? Exactly! You take advantage of the opportunity to accept these rides. So, not only do you get on the good side of your boss. But you are also looking at the possibility of receiving the most diligent staff member of the month. Isn’t that bliss to the ears?

Many of us despise having to make difficult decisions. We always hope that we don’t get to make tough choices because they require deep thoughts and dire risks. The harsh reality is that we cannot avoid making difficult choices.
