In a world of hustle and struggles, we all tend to find some ways to escape our world, even for a minute, except you are completely into life’s BDSM services. For some, it’s alcohol, gambling, smoking, retail therapy, drugs, and so on. Most times, our vices eventually become our addictions, and some become part of our reality. However, no matter what we do to escape it, reality will always be there. It may not wait for you in terms of time, but it will be there.
I particularly retire into my imagination, where I have created multiple lives and environments. My choice of which environment to pick depends on my mood and interests. Most times, I relive the stories I have set for that environment, and sometimes I make edits, you know, adding and subtracting what doesn’t feel right. In some cases, I am unable to choose from existing environments because they don’t fit my mood, so I create a new one. I am surprised that my imaginative worlds haven’t leaked into my dreams yet, but dreaming is a form of imagination. Is it possible that the reason I don’t dream so much is that I have a conscious imaginative process?
The thing with imaginative worlds is that it’s easy to get carried away because of the comfort it gives. When you bring your imagined worlds into real life, there is often conflict and confusion. You are perplexed because everything is not controlled and patterned out as it is in your created worlds. When things get tough in real life, your imaginative worlds become a crutch you cling to like a child cuddling a teddy bear to sleep. The infiltration lingers on longer than necessary when in a vulnerable state, and the danger is that the real world may leave you behind.
A common theme in all my worlds is being a superior version of my real self. It feels like creating myself and putting all the features I would like in the real world if I wasn’t too lazy and tired all the time. However, as imaginative as these worlds are, they have pushed me to be a better version of myself because why else am I in Lagos Business School writing this? Creating worlds may not be for everyone, but for some of us, it’s a vice we have chosen to help us survive the real world.
Welcome to my world, where I control and dominate every aspect of it and where time and space do not matter. A world of unicorns and rainbows, dragons and dungeons, kings and queens, life and death, food and drink, pain and pleasure, light and darkness, tears and joy, wisdom and power, and a world of peace.
Anytime you feel overwhelmed with life, breathe and close your eyes for a minute and imagine where you would rather be, what you would rather be doing, or even a different alternate universe you would want to be in. It doesn’t take away your current reality, but it puts a smile on your face and helps you power through your day, even if it buys you as little as a minute.
