15 “and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day”. Genesis 1:15-19
In the book of Genesis, which introduces us to God and his master plan in the creation of the universe and mankind, we see a perfect representation of what earth looked like from the first to the seventh day of creation, and God saw that it was good.
The Sun, Moon, and Stars were created to aid man, and it is well known to certain scientists and enthusiasts that they may have existed for billions of years before the account of Genesis was given, but that is a debate for another time.
Over Centuries, these luminary body – the Sun has been a source of life to man, animals, and all living things; the Sun gives light to us during the day, it tells us that a new day has set in, ushers in new seasons, helps in the process of photosynthesis for plants, aids agriculture, and so on.
In the same vein, cultures, and religions all over the world have also practiced prominent Sun worship include the Incas in Peru, the Nabateans, who built the city of Petra in Jordan, Shintoism in Japan, Egypt, the Aztecs, the Mayas, and the ancient Greeks.
I think that worshiping the sun is idolatry. As Christians, Yahweh tells us not to have any other gods because he is a jealous God. However, I find it amusing that we would worship something created to serve us, or more accurately, to guide us; the sun cannot speak or do anything. writer Christian author William Tyler Olcott. “Nothing proves so much the antiquity of solar idolatry as the care Moses took to prohibit it. “Take care,” said he to the Israelites, “lest when you lift up your eyes to Heaven and see the sun, the moon, and all the stars, you be seduced and drawn away to pay worship and adoration to the creatures which the Lord your God has made for the service of all the nations under Heaven.”
There are some who differ on this school of thought, they argue that if in the book of Joshua, it says that Joshua the commander of the Lord’s people commanded the sun to stand still, why do we dispute that the Sun is incapable of having powers of its own. The sun wields a force of power which is only understood by a few who have gained mysterious knowledge of the sun and its efficacies.
Sun will continue to exist, and will burn in all brightness revealing its beauty throughout eternity, will it ever stop shining? No, I believe but only time will reveal.
