Complexity and Unity of Human Nature
Some indisputable things about Human Nature:
- The human shows emotions with high similarity of those of animals: enjoyment, anger, fear, surprise, pain, desire, pleasure, disgust, sadness, enjoyment;
- Although some emotions are similar to those of animals, what we know and understand influences them and drugs alter them: jealousy, despair, hope, joy, envy, hatred and love. Here, what we feel and how we feel it is greatly influenced by external stimuli;
- We can choose and understand. No other animal can do such to this extent.
- We view ourselves as a sole body
- The mental and spiritual aspects of man are integrated and it is well imbibed into all parts of our society.
Man has two aspects, the spiritual and the material, with neither of the two driving the whole body. There is a unity between them and non is more important than the other, working side by side. Eating, praying, getting scared, doing our hobbies and so much more.
Emotions are a good representation of the dual nature of man. The fear which stems from facing a wild animal is material but we feel it how we feel our other emotions, like sadness, hope, joy, love. But to distinguish, there is a difference in the euphoria (joy) that follows after taking alcohol and the joy one gets when receiving the good news of the recovery in health of a sick friend.
Managing our Complex Nature
The directive role in our lives should be played by not our sentiments nor emotions but by our intelligence. This is because:
- Our intelligence helps us view and make sense of the world. Whereas, our emotions are aroused by only some aspects of reality. Oure emotions are typically aroused by things we would term as short term, non-lasting. Allowing our emotions give directive won’t give sufficient weight or will leave out of account many important data and in some cases, skew our analysis process of the data;
- Our multiple emotions pull in different directions. Our intelligence is needed in creating unity and harmony between them, directing them in mutually compatible ways;
- Our emotions could provoke varying actions in us which could be detrimental to us and those around us. It is very unpredictive, which makes it unreliable as a guiding factor.
To take control of our emotions, we must be aware of them. Step back an take your time to account for what you are feeling. Do work to eliminating or minimizing them, understand them, educate them and control them. A reach emotional life helps us know the world better. It gives us the ability to be more open to the things within it, helping us respond more adequately to it.
Sexuality
Our sexuality is very important to our identity as a human being. We are more than just the body that is seen. There are a lot more aspects pertaining to me, I have feelings, emotions and predispositions. These influence the things I do as well as the best way for me to do them. All dimensions of who we are is influenced by our sex, man or woman.
A summarizing difference between woman and man is mostly due to intensity and predominance, rather than presence or absence of given traits. It can be said that all human beings have all traits but all traits are exhibited to varying degrees and these modulate our psychological and our intellectual life.
