Am i shooting to make it?

Yesterday, in between class work and business activity, i took some time to do a quick 2024 planning with the help of my clarity coach Tolu Micheals. One of the questions I was asked during this exercise was to list out my Big 3 for 2024. The “Big 3” are my most important goals of the year. If those were the only goals I achieved in the new year, I would be satisfied regardless of how the year turns out.

This was the second time I was carrying out this exercise. The first time was in 2022, and as of today, i have achieved those top 3. It is one of the easiest and clearest ways to set goals, to ensure the most important things are taking the top priority. Everything else is a welcomed bonus.

Anyway, back to my top 3 for 2024. I spent some short time thinking through it and then I realized, that one of my major priorities in 2024 is to fight through my MBA, show up consistently and pass my exams excellently. These short couple of weeks have been tough. I’ve had to draw from the strength of God and rely on him to guide and help me.

A couple of hours ago, I read an email by James Clair highlighting a story shared by his students and it resonated so much with me :

“My dad and I love basketball. We used to play hoops in the front yard almost every day when I was growing up. He was also my coach for many years.

One thing that always stuck with me was him saying “shoot to make it.” I think there’s a lot of moments in basketball and in life where we are just “throwing a shot up” and hoping it goes in.

How I interpreted his mantra was to have intention. If you are going to take a shot, take a good one and take it to make it. I always come back to what he said when I’m evaluating decisions I’m making and actions I take.

Am I shooting to make it?”

That question took me back to yesterday when I mentioned continuing my MBA is important to me, hence my top goal in 2024. However, I realized I was slipping into complacency by not being specific as to how i wanted to do my MBA as well as my expected outcome.

There is a thin line between surviving, being indifferent, and excelling.

I do not want to walk through my MBA hoping that I make it, I am certain this is important to me and that i can pull through and excel at it.

Therefore, I will shoot to make it. I will show up fully present, purposeful, and powerful.

To shoot to make it, i believe the following character attribute will be paramount

  1. Dogged Focus
  2. Resilliance
  3. Curiosity
  4. Self management
  5. Clear mind space

I am growing through each of them and committed to ensuring I keep doing well.
