Going Berserk

Written by Imo Joshua · 1 min read >

There was relative peace and calm the world over before the introduction of these numerous programming languages. The birth of each presents a complex problem, ranging from learning to application. People on the other side would likely oppose me on this assumption, but I love simplicity. There seems to be no end to new analytic tools—R, Python (is that the snake?), SQL, Power BI, etc. I guess I should have focused on administering injections to people in the hospital. Excel was doing a great job as the tool of business; then we made its life complex, and it could not keep up. Okay, that was just a ramble. The world has changed a lot, and we all must change with it or face being left behind. In the current climate, ignorance will not be celebrated or taken as an excuse. The birth of programming software like the ones listed above has significantly helped humans simplify things. Better analysis is being made, and insights are drawn from them. In the business landscape, the advent of software tools has helped businesses automate processes.

Earlier this week, we had an introduction to the study of a programming language called R. Please do not ask what it stands for, as I do not know at the time of writing. A Google search might help better. R is a programming language developed in 1993 by two statisticians in New Zealand: Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka at the University of Auckland. While in my opinion, there is nothing gentlemanly in his name, the language itself is revered for its robust statistical capabilities. Over the years, R has solidified its position as one of the top twenty programming languages, according to a user survey conducted in 2003.

As we navigate this era of change, the journey into the intricacies of a programming language like R becomes more than a technical pursuit; it becomes a passport to unlocking the full potential of data. The ability to harness the power of R opens doors to advanced statistical modelling, machine learning, and the extraction of meaningful insights from complex datasets. Over the course of several weeks, much will be demanded of us in class and outside of class as we strive to become better business analysts and decision-makers. Will it be tedious? Your guess is as good as mine. But at LBS, we get things done, and we do it perfectly well.

While the proliferation of programming languages may seem daunting, it represents a rich sense of endless possibilities. The languages and tools available today empower individuals to push the boundaries of what was once thought impossible. The evolution of technology is a force that cannot be halted, and as we stand at the intersection of simplicity and complexity, the choice to embrace the future lies in our hands. The journey into the world of programming languages, including R, is a journey toward empowerment, innovation, and a deeper understanding of the data-driven world in which we live. Here and now, we march to victory in conquering another city.
