Written by David Oseghare · 2 min read >

In pursuit of any goal, one has to figure out the necessary requirements to be competent in the chosen field. Such requirements may include attention to detail, analytical prowess, critical thinking, creativity, affinity for large numbers, fluency in use of tech products and so on. These requirements may vary depending on the nature and scope of the field, but they are essential for achieving success and excellence.

In my chosen field of pursuit, management consulting, the 3 most important skills based on my research are:

  1. Critical Thinking
  2. Problem Solving
  3. Storytelling (Effective Communication)

These skills are crucial for management consultants because they enable them to deal with complex and ambiguous problems, provide effective solutions, and communicate their findings and recommendations to clients and stakeholders. Let me explain each of these skills in more detail and how I assessed my abilities in line with them.

Critical Thinking: Critical thinking is the ability to analyze and evaluate information, arguments, or ideas in a logical and systematic way. It involves actively and objectively assessing information to make reasoned judgments or decisions. Key things to note here are analysis, logic, systematic, objectivity. Being able to analyze a set of information in a systematic way using logic and avoiding bias, is the framework of critical thinking. Critical thinking is important for management consultants because they need to understand the problem, identify the root causes, and evaluate the pros and cons of different alternatives. To assess my critical thinking skills, I used online tests and exercises that measure my logical reasoning, argument analysis, and cognitive biases.

Problem Solving: Problem-solving is the process of finding solutions to challenges or difficulties. It involves identifying a problem, gathering relevant information, considering various solutions, and choosing the best course of action to overcome the issue. Problem-solving is important for management consultants because they need to provide practical and feasible solutions that meet the client’s needs and expectations. To assess my problem-solving skills, I used case studies and simulations that mimic real-life scenarios and require me to apply my knowledge, creativity, and analytical skills.

Storytelling (Effective Communication): Storytelling as a means for effective communication involves conveying information, messages, or ideas through the structure of a story. Instead of presenting facts or data in a straightforward manner, storytelling uses a narrative format with characters, a plot, and emotions to engage and connect with the audience. This approach makes information more memorable, relatable, and impactful, enhancing the communication’s effectiveness. It’s a way of framing messages in a compelling and memorable manner, often resonating more deeply with the listeners. Storytelling is important for management consultants because they need to communicate their findings and recommendations in a clear and persuasive way that convinces the client and the stakeholders to take action. To assess my storytelling skills, I used feedback and coaching from mentors and peers, as well as online resources and tools that help me improve my presentation and writing skills.

In order to pursue my goal of becoming a management consultant, I need to develop and master three key skills: critical thinking, problem solving, and storytelling. These skills are essential for dealing with complex and ambiguous problems, providing effective solutions, and communicating them in a clear and persuasive way. I have assessed my current level of these skills using various methods and tools, and I have realized that I have a lot of room for improvement in all areas. Therefore, I will continue to work on enhancing these skills and learning from others who have more experience and expertise in this field. By doing so, I hope to achieve my goal and become a competent and successful management consultant.

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
