THE WISDOM IN MISTAKES

Written by Olayemi Idris · 1 min read >

I recently picked up this phrase from a short video in our assigned online Harvard course and it stood out for me, “Good Judgement comes from experience and Experience comes from Bad Judgement”. I had to replay the video to be sure I heard right. Although, the phrase was made in an attempt to emphasize the power of precision in communication – “the journey from bad judgment to good judgment is illuminated by clarity”, it additionally encapsulated, in my opinion, the evolution from uncertainty to wisdom being a continuous refinement process.

The essence of this saying reflects a universal truth about the nature of learning and growth. It helps one to acknowledge that the path to acquiring good judgment is sometimes paved with moments of misjudgment and or mistakes. It is also deeply rooted in the cyclical nature of growth through the continuous loop of trial and error, navigating challenges, and refinement of decision-making abilities. And the fundamental acceptance of imperfection helps forge the path of realization into invaluable insights that can only be attained through potent life lessons towards wiser choices.

This sentiment cuts across cultures, nations, and generations, emphasizing the power of learning from one’s own experience. In an atmosphere where mistakes and vulnerabilities are perceived as an acknowledgment of error and owning up to the full responsibility of it, it reframes the situation into opportunities and catalysts for improvement. This helps to improve self–awareness, solidify resilience and better decision-making. It emphasizes that our capacity for sound judgment is intricately connected to the lessons learned through the less-than-perfect moments in life.

Reflecting on past decisions, and events is thus a crucial part of learning as it connects all the experiences into a coherent and purposeful design. It embodies a transformative power that acts as a dynamic catalyst for change. The conscious act of avoiding unsuccessful patterns or approaching situations with a different point of view or strategy aligns our choices with our self-evolvement. Reflections allow us to discern patterns and identify the core values of identifying the root causes and consequences of every decision or action and understanding that these are stepping stones toward self-improvement. It is important to note that reflection on past mistakes is not a waste of time but a brushstroke that contributes to the masterpiece of our journey. However, dwelling on past mistakes will blur the guide towards a more enlightened future.

In our personal and intellectual growth, it is imperative we come to terms with this nuanced understanding of decision-making which transforms us into adept navigators of life’s complexities. That is, Good judgment is an art cultured through one and another’s life experiences of both triumphs and tribulations. Because, as we navigate through the twists and turns of life, the combination of our experiences shapes a pool of knowledge that becomes the bedrock of sound judgment and understanding self and purpose.
