A popular saying goes that change is the only constant aspect of life. This implies that Change is unavoidable; a persistent factor that affects every aspect of our lives, from the way we reason, act, and relate with others. As a vital part of our experiences, it challenges us to adapt, innovate, and evolve in ways that help us to prosper.
While we agree with the need for change, oftentimes, we struggle to embrace it. We easily become comfortable with our customs and fight any actions or requirements that may contest what we are familiar with. Nevertheless, change is necessary for growth, whether personal or organizational.
It is generally believed that once you can conceive something, you can achieve it. This relates to our beliefs and hence our capacity. One of the main importance of change in relation to personal growth is that it challenges our beliefs and assumptions. Our views and philosophies about ourselves and the world are often fashioned by our experiences, culture, and upbringing. However, as we grow in age, we encounter circumstances and people that challenge these beliefs and force us to re-evaluate our viewpoints.
For instance, while growing up I believed that success is largely dependent on hard work and effort and most of my life it was applicable, however, some particular setbacks in business began to challenge this assumption. A sudden realization that factors such as luck, timing, and networks also play an important role in achieving success. Such realizations helped me become more flexible in my thinking and allowed me to explore different approaches to realizing my business goals.
Accepting change also helps us become more resilient and flexible in the face of uncertainty. Life is unpredictable, and unforeseen events such as accidents, loss, or career changes can disrupt our sense of stability and security. However, if we learn to embrace change, we develop the capacity and mindset needed to maneuver and adapt to new situations.
Learning at the Lagos Business School has been a one-of-a-kind experience so far, with several changes to orientation, learning, engagement etc. Embracing this change has been a bit tough, however, I experience daily improvements as I progress.
Finally, embracing change helps us break free from limiting beliefs and behaviors that hold us back. We all have patterns of behavior that we engage in, even when they no longer useful. For instance, I used to have a fear of public speaking; I was actually extremely shy, even to some of my first cousins, and would readily avoid having to make such engagements. A particular experience with an uncle of mine made me realize that I needed to ask for some things before I got them. This left me with the desire to gain my confidence and overcome my shyness. My option was to join the drama unit in my secondary school which exposed me to large audiences and hence gradual improvements in my ability to communicate freely. All I needed was to embrace change, challenge myself to confront my fears and develop the confidence and skills needed to overcome them through stage drama.
In conclusion, change is a vital part of personal growth, and embracing it is essential if we want to succeed. By challenging our beliefs and assumptions, becoming more flexible, pursuing new opportunities, and breaking free from limiting behaviors, we can develop the resilience and self-awareness needed to navigate through life’s challenges. So, the next time you find yourself resisting change, remember that it may be a catalyst for the growth and transformation you seek.
