Just like every other week, this week came with its own share of notable events, dramatic scenes, captivating endings and touching revelations. Not to sound like a prophet but a prophecy that is always going to come to past in LBS is that you are going to hear, listen and learn one new thing that is going to captivate your mind in a way that literally shifts the grounds beneath you. It is always going to be a kid discovering sugar, or USSR launching a man into space kind of excitement coupled with surprise. This program has proven to be an endless stream of captivating ideas, thoughts that propel the mind and perspective that shed light into not just the surface stories but the in-depth inside story.
This week, we engaged in data analytics session which was a continuum of what we had been introduced to a couple of weeks back. This time, the tutor in charge took a more eccentric turn and approach to teaching the course. Prior to the class, he had distributed and shared the course outline to various students. He tasked them to research into the courses and topics and be ready to make a fine presentation in class. The instruction was clear and concise; the students had been allowed to overthrow constituted authority and now are saddled with the responsibility of tutoring their colleagues. The task was enormous but the aftermath presentations from my colleagues who had been saddled with the responsibility showed it was not an insurmountable one at that.
The class braced up for the presentations that followed. We learnt extensively about the modus operandi of the SQL server; a complex data analytics tool employed by companies and organizations to analyze data and then use to make conscious, logical and business friendly decisions that would catapult their portfolios to a greater height. Before pursuing this program, my entire conception of what constituted data analytics had been solely the operations of Excel. However, here I was getting introduced to other systems of analysis that proved to just as beneficial as the ones I was earlier familiar with.
Moving on, we also got back into the business diagnosis mode when we resumed sessions on how to analyze business problems. As someone who is not much of a fan of numbers, this particular course was gradually becoming my favorite. This was going well until we had to analyze a case of a struggling business in Nigeria that had to pack up and was also looking at reestablishing itself into its old space. We had to dissect the numbers, peruse thru the digits and come up with fine solutions for the business. This was arduous as every clue we got had some issues. At the end of the day, valuable lesson here was how to make good tradeoff because in the vast majority of instances, there are no absolute answers to situations. What you have to do is thoroughly analyze which position gives the company the best utility while minimizing risks to the barest minimum.
Thanks.
