Analysis of Business Problems commonly called ABP, the lecturer was Dr Anibaba, I think that was the only lecturer I heard about from LBS before I even joined the MEMBA 12 Class, before I attended the class I tried to check on the e-learning platform on what the course entailed and I was intrigued by the way she presented the course, I was also fascinated about the fact that in this course, I would learn how to take decisions using critical learning skills and also a systematic approach so I was excited and couldn’t wait for the ABP class to start. Unfortunately, I missed the introductory classes but that wasn’t going to deter me because the main classes were going to start the week after and I prepared and planned to be there physically.
Finally, the day for the ABP Class was here and Dr Anibaba came prepared or did she need to be prepared? she mentioned she had taught every MEMBA class, but that’s a story for another day, the class started off very well and it was mostly an interactive class and she emphasized it, she said class participation would take 30% of the class marks, and that if you made a contribution that was entirely wrong, you would get a negative mark, till date, I don’t know if that was a joke or not, I think I will make more investigation to this but in summary on how to get your scores on class participation she emphasized on the following;
- In-depth analysis of cases prior to class sessions.
- Active participation in class
- Ensure contributions are well thought out.
- Listen when others are making contributions for the logic behind the arguments.
- Always have a justification for your thought process.
While working through cases studies; note the following:
- Know what is useful.
- Extract the key points from the following:
- Descriptive information- overview of the situations in the case
- Inferential Information- Raw facts of the case that indicate the context of the issue/problem at hand.
- Predictive Information- Inferences based on the facts and how to proceed.
The class will cover a combination of critical thinking and Analytical thinking she said.
Unfortunately for me on the first day of class, I was seated at the back seat and I got a whats app message from my office to quickly approve a transaction, so I deviated from the class and I was trying to quickly read through the transactions and I was shocked when Dr Anibaba called my name and said; David, you are not in this class, your attention isn’t here, I was really shocked and scared at the same time, in my mind my class participation scores will be reduced, I also felt bad that for a first interaction with me she called me out for not being present in her class, but over all I have enjoyed the class Analysis of business problems, I think in my own opinion that it’s one of the hardest courses in our first semester of our MBA in Lagos business school, this is because the every single course we are doing in our first semester ,ABP seems to have a bit of every single course put together, be in Data Analysis, Management Communication or even Corporate Finance, so you need to have a good knowledge of all the courses, I mean each of them to be able to do well in ABP, it has not been easy but we are pushing and hopefully we will scale through. The Fear of Dr Anibaba and ABP is real, ask Any MBA student of LBS.
