As humans crave for social interactions, conflict, an inherent and pervasive aspect of such union creeps in. This can be seen at interpersonal level up to international sphere. While conflict is most times viewed as a menace due to its disruptive nature, it is also a necessity for growth, change and evolution of societies. This dual nature of conflict emphasis its complexity and impact on individuals and the larger communities.

Firstly, conflict is perceived to be a menace due to its inherent issues. At the interpersonal level, it can lead to strain relationships, emotional distress and even violence. For example, divorce among previously lovely couples. In organizational settings, conflict may hinder and disrupt teamwork, thus leading to a toxic work environment. Moreover, on the societal stage, the presence of conflict can escalate into wars, causing immeasurable human and economic damages.

Also, conflict is often associated with negative emotions, stress and a sense of insecurity. This fear can lead to withdrawal behaviors, hindering creativity and innovation. The ill effect of conflict lies in its ability to disrupt harmony, sow discord ultimately creating an environment of distrust.

Conversely, conflict is a necessity for progress and positive change. It serves as an initiator for addressing underlying issues, fostering innovation and the need for seeking social justice. In the academic environment, conflict promotes critical thinking, contributing to the development of diverse perspectives. In the business climes, conflicts can lead to the identification of inefficiencies in decisions, prompting organizational restructuring or improved strategies.

In the political arena, history is full of instances where conflict, though initially disruptive, had ultimately resulted in positive transformations, such as the civil rights movement, women’s suffrage and apartheid. Conflict helps pave way for social and political movements challenging oppressive systems and advocating for the right of humans.

Furthermore, conflicts can be a crucible for personal and collective growth. Facing and navigating conflicts requires individuals and societies to develop resilience, empathy, and effective communication skills. It forces us to confront our differences, challenge our assumptions, and seek common ground. In this sense, conflict becomes a mechanism for learning, adaptation, and the refinement of our understanding of ourselves and the world.
