A Guide to Masterful Time Management MEMBA 12

Written by oluremi ebuehi · 1 min read >

Being a modular executive MBA student at the prestigious Lagos Business School in the heart of Lagos comes with its own challenges. Between classes (both virtual and physical), personal assignments, group projects, trying to read ahead of class, work and personal commitments, effective time management becomes a critical skill for success. You must be able to juggle your time to make sure you are not lagging in your schoolwork, work deadlines and personal time with your family.

You must be strategic by having a holistic view of your responsibilities from course work to extra curricula activities. For example, would your employer allow you work a day or two from home, if you don’t have that privilege already? You may need to disengage from committed active participation in any social or religious group for the duration of your MBA programme. You should only engage in activities that need your personal touch and cannot be done by any other person. Prioritise and set realistic goals in every area. You will need to create a road map for the weeks and months ahead.

Embrace the power of a well-organized calendar. You cannot place reliance on your memory.  Everything must be itemised in your calendar so that nothing is left out. Whether you prefer digital tools like Google Calendar or a classic planner, use a system that works for you. Schedule classes, study sessions, and even downtime to ensure you have a clear overview of your commitments.

Tackling complex projects can be overwhelming, it’s better to break them down into component smaller tasks. This not only makes them less daunting but also allows you to allocate your time more efficiently and track your progress effectively. How many hours a day or a week do you need to study to keep abreast of your schoolwork?

Identify your most productive hours and allocate them to high-priority tasks. This structured approach minimizes multitasking and enhances focus. Leverage technology to enhance your time management. Use productivity apps for task management, note-taking, and project collaboration

You must learn how to say no without offering any explanations. While extracurricular activities especially in school and networking are valuable, it’s crucial to know your limits. Learn to say no when necessary, ensuring that you can commit fully to your existing responsibilities.

Group projects are a crucial aspect of the MBA program. Effectively managing collaborative efforts requires coordination and communication. Set clear expectations, establish deadlines, and leverage collaborative tools to streamline the group work process. It helps to identify quickly  the different skill set of each member to leverage on their strengths. Timed group meetings with clear cut objectives must take place regularly.

Surround yourself with a support network at work, home and school. Connect with fellow students, share experiences, and learn from one another. Having a strong support system not only provides valuable insights but also helps in navigating the demands of business school more effectively.

Effective time management is not just a skill—it’s a lifeline. The MBA journey is not just about managing time; it’s about mastering the art of balancing priorities and fostering personal and professional growth.
