TO GROW FASTER, BE WILLING TO BE WRONG

Written by Moshood Abiolu · 2 min read >

My heart pounds hard as I type this opening sentence because I want it to have the impact I desire. With the first sentence gone, I know now how to go about my writing to have the impact I want it to. I’d like to give my two cents about my experience since I started attending classes. I have observed with utmost astonishment during every class how most of our case studies have no “right” answer. There are advantages and disadvantages to every decision to be made. This interesting concept has made me appreciate and see risk in a new perspective.

Risk comes with every decision we make and as long as you are alive, you will have to decide. Life is a series of decision making and a popular quote says, “being successful comes down to making quality decisions.” I was a big believer in the quote prior to our classes but as we began taking case studies over and again, I have begun questioning that quote. I look back now to some of the decisions I have made in the past which led to good results. From my introspection, I realized that the decisions that got me exponential business results came from pivoting after a bad result from a decision I thought was initially good. Therefore, I can say now that attaining success faster requires a willingness to be wrong and being prepared for the fall.

MACRO AND MICRO DECISIONS

Although, there are some instances in my life where the decisions I made were simple and straightforward as the mathematical equation 1 + 1, which an elementary pupil knows is 2. However, these were micro decisions; they weren’t decisions that caused an exponential boost in my business. When it came to macro decisions, it was never a 1 + 1 decision making. Macro decisions come with risk. I wouldn’t be who I am today if I wasn’t willing to be wrong with macro decisions and prepared for the fall. Now, it’s not the willingness to be wrong that had the most impact on my path; it was the ability to be creative and pivot as fast as possible – in other words, prepare for the fall.

A good example of this creativity is how I am currently managing having to attend classes with running my business. Having to fit the rigorous business school schedule into an already busy schedule isn’t easy but I have to do it. Calling it quits after receiving the school schedule and going back to my comfort zone of running my business is quite easy but that’s not who I am. I intend to squeeze every inch of potential I find in myself until I become my version 2.0.

I believe we all have this creativity within us but most times, we don’t put ourselves in positions that ignite this creative fire. Think back to circumstances where you found yourself between a rock and a hard place and miraculously found a way out! If you look at those situations, they were ones that really had a massive impact on your journey.

The amazing thing about growth is that as we grow in one aspect of our lives, it trickles down to every other part. We bring the confidence from one area and apply it to the rest because we know we will be fine even if we are wrong. Being wrong no longer scare us because we see it for what it truly is – AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH.

I wouldn’t have penned this beautiful piece if I hadn’t typed the first sentence. Mind you, I know it’s far from perfect but that’s what growth is about. I am willing to be wrong and edit my first draft over and again till I am satisfied.
