My musings: The Dance of Uncertainty

Written by Olumuyiwa Ogunsi · 1 min read >

In the intricate dance of decision-making, the outcomes we anticipate are rarely set in stone, even with the most meticulous planning. The unpredictable often creeps in, reshaping the outcomes we thought we had mapped out so precisely. A glaring example of this unpredictability was the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a curveball that few, if any, organizations had factored into their strategies.

In the aftermath of Covid, a fundamental question surfaces: does technology play a pivotal role in determining the variability of outcomes? Can it be both a reliable guide and an unpredictable force?

Arguably, technology enhances predictability, exemplified by tools like Google Maps that provide real-time insights. However, when faced with unforeseen events on the road, even the most advanced technology may need to adjust its predictions, injecting an element of uncertainty.

Two significant factors contribute to the uncertainty we grapple with today. Firstly, the realm of human free will stands as an ever-present catalyst for unpredictability. The growing population introduces a myriad of thoughts, choices, and actions that elude prediction. Consider the uncertainty caused by the individual who crafted Google Maps versus the truck driver whose careless actions led to unforeseen traffic disruptions.

In a world populated by diverse minds, uncertainty becomes an inherent part of the equation. Picture an island with just one inhabitant – predictability reigns supreme. However, introduce a second person, and certainty takes a nosedive.

So, what then is the purpose of strategy and planning in a world rife with uncertainties? It’s about preparing for the worst while striving for the best outcomes within our control. We are essentially always taking a calculated bet on life.

The second-factor amplifying uncertainty is the unseen force of nature, the universe, and the power that governs it all. In the words of ancient wisdom, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of God that will stand.”

In essence, embracing uncertainty becomes a vital aspect of decision-making. As we navigate the complex interplay of technology, human free will, and the forces of nature, our ability to adapt and respond becomes paramount. The outcomes of our decisions may remain wrapped in uncertainty, but our preparedness and resilience can tip the scales in our favor.
