There is an appalling phrase amongst most youths of Nigeria ‘I don arrive’. The idea that Success is a particular destination. This has sadly led to a plethora of unfortunate incidents. There has been a rise in ritual killing among the youths all because of this arrival mentality among them. There has also been a lot of financial forgery and scamming of different individuals. Several more problems have emanated from this unfortunate mentality. Highlighted below are broad insight to the negative effect of this cancer called a thought pattern amongst our youth:
- A rise in ritual killing:
There have been several reports of teenagers being involved in kidnapping their fellow friends, wives, husbands, mother, and their loved ones for rituals with the hope to ‘ARRIVE’ and have financial resources. However, after careful observation of the end result of these people, they tend to have mental breakdown due to the atrocities they commit. Majority of these people get caught and their end is way worse than the way they begin. Mothers have lost their children to these people. It is appalling the way these people’s heart have become smeared and they kill even young babies so as to ‘ARRIVE’. Nigeria used to be a safe space in the olden days, where parents are safe to leave their kids to come home themselves no matter the time. The community encouraged a sense of protective lifestyle. But, with the breed of youths we have now with this dangerous mentality, no time is too late and nowhere is too safe and parents are increasingly scared to send their child to school.
- A rise in illegal activity
Another unfortunate effect of this arrival mentality is the appalling rate of young men and women involved in illegal activities popularly known as “Yahoo”. This unfortunate act has put honest Nigerians who have good intentions in a negative public light. Countries have marked Nigerians has possible threat in business. This cancer called “yahoo yahoo” is a major effect of this arrival mentality. Many young and promising men and women have been brainwashed with the idea of quick money by engaging in this. The educational system has become a nuisance to most young people and they tend to rather spend hours scamming people and spending the money frivolity. Little do they know that money gotten cheaply would be lost cheaply in other words you cannot give what you don’t have.
The primary way to deal with this mentality is to develop a healthy family educational system. It is often said that “every thief comes from a home”. This shows the excellency of teaching the children with intention and instilling in them the values of patience, contentment and hard work. Success happens by you becoming successful and not merely by arrival. Success is a process, the fallacy that you can become successful overnight is the reason why people become victims of Ponzi Schemes and other get rich quick schemes that aims at extorting people with this arrival mentality.
In conclusion, people with this arrival mentality never sustain this success because they do not know how they got there in the first place. This is the main reason why maintaining success is greater than even getting there. Additionally, the reason why managers are regarded as paramount people in the business because of this sole reason of maintaining success. There are the pillars of the business success, this is why they are rewarded higher than regular staff.
