Written by holi_moli · 1 min read >

While still in the early stages most courses, the overall approach to the courses and the various cases treated so far are interestingly a new dimension of academics to me. As a entrepreneur looking to broaden my knowledge in the field of business, I made the decision to pursue an Executive MBA at Lagos Business School, because of the school’s reputation of creating great environment for researchers. The first few months have been an incredible journey filled with challenges, growth, and valuable experiences that have shaped me both personally and professionally.

Data analytics being a powerful tool that can be used to solve problems in many different fields. Excel has been my main tool for data analysis, and I’ve found that it can do a lot of different things due its functions and formulas; I can analyze data and look at it in different ways. For example, I’ve used Excel to make pivot tables, which have helped me summarize big datasets and find patterns and trends. Looking like a hard nut to crack now, my interest in data analytics will keep me wanting to learn more. I’ve learnt that data analytics is a powerful tool that can be used to solve problems in many different fields.

Analysis of business problems is showing me how to identify a problem, map out an objective, design a criteria, analyze using numbers, weigh the qualitative options and then come to a decision. The way the process is meticulously carried out marvels me all the time and I look forward to learning more. CFA is one class I had thought I would actively participate in, but by the second class, I was already speechless. The MBA class has candidates from varied backgrounds, so everyone finds that some classes reflect their strengths and others, their weaknesses. I once joked on a group chat during one CFA class that it was clear to see those who had studied accounting.

Naturally, I had expected that the accounting taught in a graduate program would be much more advanced; I just hadn’t thought that it would get so serious in the first few introductory weeks. There are so many new concepts that I learnt and have to get myself quickly accustomed to. The Faculty’s approach to corporate financial accounting tutoring has also offered invaluable insights into the world of financial management and reporting within the corporate landscape. Over the course of these first few classes, I have gained a more understanding of financial statements, accounting principles, and their crucial role in decision-making for businesses.

Finally, Corporate Financial Accounting taught me about the regulatory environment and the importance of compliance with accounting standards and regulations. The course covered topics such as the general purpose of financial reporting and the role of regulatory bodies like the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in the implementation and development of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in ensuring consistency and comparability in financial reporting.

Happy reading.
