MBA Reflections: Hit the Ground Running

Written by Taofeeq Afolabi Sarayi · 2 min read >

Upon resumption to the full course work, in my mind, I was somewhat ready for the classes and lessons. I wanted to fully explore all of the introductory areas that we had been introduced to by the facilitators of the brush-up sessions. At some point, it felt like I had been in the program for quite some time. This was due to the massive amount of information, knowledge I had been able to consume just in one week of introductory classes. As someone with very little background finance, business education, management sessions, it felt like I was in a Mecca of business scholarship. The feeling of being introduced to so much knowledge and the feeling of been utterly ignorant was such a huge conflict in my head. It will take some time to resolve this crucial contradiction.

Moving forward, we held some classes on data analytics that were really expository and confusing at the same time. Before joining this cohort, my entire conception of data analytics did not exceed knowing how to effectively use the Excel App. As I said earlier, I felt like I knew at least enough to survive the class. Upon introduction of the course work, I was stunned to see an extensive scope of the course and how it encompassed areas beyond just data entry and reportage. I saw real hands on deck approach to analyzing data, sorting data and representing data in a way that was a lot more constructive than whatever was in my imagination. This was the tip of the iceberg. I also got introduced to a lot more technical areas like coding with software like python, R to analyze and articulate data. This was mind blowing for me because it exceeded my imagination. It only reinforced the belief that your idea or knowledge on a particular subject is a microcosm of what the idea generally entails. The thought of not being an encyclopedia of ideas never prevailed itself to me until this time. It was a good self-awareness lesson.

Furthermore, we also had some sessions on how to analyze business problems. With just a couple of minutes into the class, it was so crystal clear that this was the class we were here for. The utility from this course was not to be underestimated. To succeed as either entrepreneurs or managers or employees, we need this knowledge like humans needed air to make it alive. It was that crucial to our entire stay in this domain. We had a presentation on a case study that had been shared earlier on. We engaged the case and thoroughly analyzed its details and intricacies. At the end of the day, we arrived at a decent conclusion in form of a position for the company in question to take. We presented our position and it engulfed into a full fledge debate on the floor. The exchange of ideas, input from other colleagues, comments from the tutor were very instrumental in how I saw the course and how I would be approaching evaluating business problems going forward. All in all, it was a great session with so much potential to spur our mind and propel us into a realm of problem solvers.

In the end, this is the clearly the start of something pivotal in our lives. At no point has scholarship been this important and I will be seizing the day as it comes.

Thank you!

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
