My Assumptions before start of the MBA program:
Before going into LBS (Lagos business school) I had my views and expectations of the institution as well as the program itself and how it would be presented or executed as some will say and how it would affect or impact me but it didn’t go exactly as planed so what exactly happened?
Well the first thing that happened as opposed to my expectations was the kind of people as well their reasons enrolling for the program. Now I thought everyone was coming here to do either of two things: learn how to build their own business whether it was starting, building or scaling. Or, learn how to manage or administrate a business for a company and in either case network for strictly business purposes so as to upgrade their business or to upgrade the capacity or value of their company or the company they work for through business deals or projects. But, quite quickly I found out that there was no one collective reason why everyone joined or applied for the MBA program.
So, what did I find out?
When I said the “kind of people” I meant professional background as well as their current practice and their deposition to casual relations or discussions outside the program with colleagues and even the facilitators/lecturers. On a lite know, we the students were enlightened on the difference between a lecturer and a facilitator and it was done a very fun way in a lite interaction with one of the very amazing facilitators known as Prof Bongo. So back ground that spanned into legal practitioners, writers and journalist, medical practitioners, engineers, tech space designers, professionals and developers, business owners and finally our consultants: those already in the finance sector like accounting portfolio managers and data/business analysts and their different reasons for enrolling whether it was to improve my business acumen like me or to level up one resume for career goals go higher in the demand plain of the job market or to level up their skills and knowledge on business administration.
But the most intriguing reasons I found out was enrolling to find clarity on which career path to follow or which business to start or maintain for those that already have businesses but are having issues with focusing on which ones to keep pushing and which one to let go and taking up big adventures because to be honest I wasn’t exposed to the point to know there were career, academic and business adventurers so it really hit me and it this brings me to the second thing I leaned. What was it?
The uniqueness of the Lagos business school MBA program which is first an exposure platform to many sectors majorly in finance sector which spans far and wide but also other sectors like tech, engineering, medical, legal and so on. Seeing a cross fertilization of knowledge which just means using knowledge from one sector to solve problems in another sector and vice versa. Although learning about the MBA program is still a work in progress because the more I continue the program the more I understand the intentions of the institution for their students. So, for anyone that would like to know what to expect from the Lagos business school MBA program as a practicing Engineer in MEP design, keep an eye out for my post for the updates on my learning journey here at the Lagos Business school.
