As I find myself two weeks into this transformative experience, I am compelled to pause and reflect on the wealth of insights already garnered. The journey began with a dedicated brush-up week, an intensive immersion into the foundational pillars of business acumen. In this article, I reflect on the invaluable learnings from this crash course, where the compass was set for a deeper understanding of decision-making, statistics, emotional intelligence, social skills, basic accounting, and effective communication.
The Power of Informed Decisions:
The decision-making module instilled in us the art and science behind making sound business decisions. One of the key takeaways from the decision-making module was the importance of considering all of the available options and weighing the risks and benefits of each option before making a decision. We also learned about the importance of gathering feedback from others and using that feedback to inform your decision. This newfound proficiency in decision-making will undoubtedly be a guiding beacon in navigating the complexities of the business world.
Demystifying Statistics: Excel as the Torchbearer
Through engaging lectures and hands-on sessions using Excel, we not only grasped the fundamentals but also witnessed the power of data-driven insights. From constructing meaningful charts to conducting basic hypothesis testing, this crash course equipped us with a practical toolkit for interpreting and utilising statistical information.
Emotional Intelligence: The Heartbeat of Leadership
In the brush-up week, we learned about the different components of emotional intelligence and how to develop them. We also discussed the importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace. One of the key takeaways from the emotional intelligence module was the importance of self-awareness which is the ability to understand your own emotions and how they impact your behavior, We also learned about the importance of empathy, which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. These skills are not only crucial for personal growth but also form the cornerstone of building collaborative, high-performing teams in the professional realm.
The Language of Business: Basic Accounting
Accounting, referred to as the language of business by Prof, was introduced with clarity and purpose. We delved into balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, gaining a foundational understanding of how financial information drives decision-making within an organisation. This knowledge forms the bedrock upon which we will build our financial acumen throughout the program.
Mastering Communication: The Art of Persuasion
In the fast-paced world of business, effective communication is not just a skill; it’s a strategic asset. From crafting persuasive messages to delivering impactful presentations, our brush-up week honed our abilities to convey ideas with precision and impact, we also learned about the importance of adapting your communication style to your audience. Reflections:
In addition to the specific topics that we covered in the brush-up week, I also learned a great deal about myself including my strengths and weaknesses. I realised that I am a good communicator and I am comfortable working in groups. However, I also realised that I need to improve my time management skills and I need to be more proactive in seeking help when I need it. As I reflect on the whirlwind of knowledge and insights gained during the brush-up week of my MBA program, I am struck by the depth and breadth of learning that has already taken place. These foundational pillars have set the stage for a transformative educational journey.
