Reflecting on my learning in management communication during the first and second intensive weeks of my MBA program at Lagos Business School #MEMBA 12

Embarking on my MBA journey felt like entering a new world where spreadsheets and PowerPoint slides became my closest companions, and the art of business communication became my trusty sidekick. As I delved into the complex universe of Management Communication, I quickly realized that learning to navigate the treacherous waters of corporate jargon and email diplomacy was akin to discovering a secret passage in a maze, filled with buzzwords, jolly acronyms, and the occasional ‘reply all’ catastrophe. The first and second intensive weeks were especially challenging, but they transformed me from a mere mortal into a communication superhero in the making. My cape is made of case studies, and my utility belt is stocked with witty one-liners.

During my first and second intensive weeks, I have undertaken numerous courses, but the one that stands out is management communication. In this essay, I will reflect on my learning in management communication, examining the importance of effective communication in the corporate world as well as the useful skills and insights I received over the first few weeks of the MBA programme.

Effective communication is vital for the success of any organization, regardless of its industry or sector. It fosters collaboration, informed decision-making, and the achievement of organizational objectives. In the corporate world, Management Communication is a critical component for transmitting strategies, goals, and essential information to all stakeholders of the organization. Through my extensive research on this topic, I have come to realize that mastering this skill is crucial for any aspiring business leader.

During my studies in Management Communication, I realized the significance of written communication and the need to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner. I learned how important it is to analyze the audience and tailor the message to their specific needs and expectations. This skill has been extremely useful in completing assignments and group projects, as well as in my daily interactions with stakeholders in my organization.

Oral communication and presentation skills are crucial aspects of Management Communication. During the course, I was required to deliver a pitch on my company’s expertise in Process Engineering Interventions within the oil and gas sector in Nigeria. Functioning as a member of Group 1 during the syndicate activities, we presented on unlocking productivity and investment opportunities in Nigeria’s agribusiness value chain. Through this exercise, I gained a deeper understanding of persuasive presentations and the three key factors: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. This helped me articulate my ideas better and effectively engage with my audience. Additionally, I learned the importance of non-verbal communication, including body language, tone, appearance, facial expressions, and eye contact, which played a significant role in the success of the presentation. I believe these skills will be essential in my current role as a business leader, where I often need to persuade key stakeholders and convey ideas effectively.

Collaboration is essential in modern business, and effective team communication is crucial to achieving collective goals. My MBA program’s Management Communication course equipped me with the tools to navigate group dynamics, resolve conflicts, and promote a productive team environment. Through the course, I learned the significance of active listening, communication style, and empathy, which are essential skills that facilitate effective collaboration and enhance team cohesion.

In today’s fast-changing business environment, the ability to communicate effectively during times of crisis is essential for maintaining public trust and confidence and is critical for an organization’s image and reputation. The course provided in-depth knowledge of crisis communication strategies and how to manage an organization’s reputation during challenging times. I have gained valuable insights into developing crisis communication plans that will be an asset to my current leadership role in case of an emergency and to ensure business continuity.

In conclusion, I believe that the MBA program has equipped me with extensive knowledge in the field of Management Communication. Throughout the program, I have come to realize the utmost importance of effective communication in the corporate world and have acquired a diverse set of skills, including written and oral communication, as well as crisis management. I believe that these skills not only enhance my academic profile but also hold great relevance for my current and future career as a business leader. Moving forward, as I continue with my MBA program, I look forward to refining and implementing these skills in real-world scenarios, confident that they will play a pivotal role in my success as a business professional.
