I had a privilege of being in attendance of 53rd Annual Accountants’ Conference in 2023.
The major theme centered around Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity for the development of Nigeria. Nigeria being a highly diverse country with challenges of nepotism, marginalization, tribalism and religiosity, which have affected the cohesion and development of Nigeria.
Various speakers were invited ranging from politicians, economist, and other various professional to give their perspective on the critical matter.
Below are some of the major highlights from the various presentations which I believe will be insightful for the reader of this piece.
Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity is crucial for national development. When all individuals, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities, access to resources, and representation, it leads to a more prosperous and stable society. Here are some ways in which diversity, equity, and inclusivity can be promoted for national development:
1. Equal representation and participation: Ensure that all segments of the population of Nigeria have a voice in political, social, and economic decision-making processes. This can be achieved through policies that promote diversity in leadership positions, quotas for underrepresented groups, and inclusive governance structures.
2. Education and awareness: Foster inclusive education systems that value diversity and teach tolerance and understanding. Encourage educational institutions to adopt inclusive curricula that reflect the diversity of Nigeria and promote awareness of different cultures, races, religions, and identities.
3. Empower marginalized communities: Address the systemic barriers that prevent marginalized communities from accessing resources, opportunities, and services. This includes providing equal access to quality healthcare, education, housing, and employment opportunities, as well as tackling discrimination and prejudice.
4. Economic empowerment: Create opportunities for economic empowerment by implementing inclusive policies that promote fair hiring practices, entrepreneurship, access to credit, and financial services for underrepresented groups. This will help reduce inequality and ensure that everyone can participate and contribute to the economy of Nigeria.
5. Social cohesion and dialogue: Facilitate dialogue and promote social cohesion among diverse groups through initiatives such as community forums, cultural exchanges, and interfaith dialogue. By fostering understanding and empathy, societies can build stronger bonds and address conflicts peacefully.
6. Legal frameworks and policies: Implement and enforce laws and policies that protect against discrimination and promote equal rights and opportunities. This includes legislation against discrimination based on race, gender, religion, disability, and other protected characteristics, as well as policies that promote diversity and inclusivity.
7. Data collection and analysis: Collect and analyze demographic data to understand the diverse needs and challenges of different groups within society. This data can inform evidence-based policies and interventions to address disparities and promote inclusivity.
8. Collaboration and partnerships: Foster partnerships between government, civil society organizations, businesses, and academia to collectively promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity. Collaboration allows for more effective and sustainable solutions to address societal challenges.
Ultimately, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic approach for achieving national development in Nigeria. A society that values and embraces its diverse population is more resilient, innovative, and prosperous.
