Juggling between work and pursuing an MBA can be a challenging endeavor. In my first semester at the Lagos Business School, all students of the MEMBA 12 were enrolled in four intensive courses: Corporate Financial Analysis, Management Communication, Data Analytics, and Analysis of Business Problems. The workload was demanding, but with some determination and effective time management, I successfully navigated through this period. Here, I will share my experience managing work and school, as well as provide insights on how to find a balance.
1. Corporate Financial Analysis:
This course is into the analysis of financial statements, assessing the financial health of companies, and understanding corporate finance. The intensive week involved in-depth lectures accompanied by numerous assignments. The highlight of this course was the Capstone project in corporate financial accounting, where we applied our knowledge to analysed real-world financials despite the considerable workload, I found this course to be intellectually stimulating and rewarding.
2. Management Communication:
Effective communication is essential in any business setting. This course aimed to enhance our written oral communication skills, focusing on strategies for presenting analyses and delivering impactful business presentations. The workload included group presentations and individual assignments. The key takeaway from this course was the importance of clear and concise communication in a professional context.
3. Data Analytics:
In today’s data-driven world, to analyse and interpret data is a crucial skill. This course aimed to equip us with the tools necessary to draw insights from large datasets. The intensive week was loaded with hands-on training with various data analysis software and techniques. Working on case studies and applying the learned concepts to real-world scenarios of our analytical abilities.
4. Analysis of Business Problems:
This course focused on developing critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities. We were exposed to various business scenarios, where we had to devise and justify solutions using a structured approach. This involved extensive readings, case analyses, and group discussions. This course provided us with the opportunity to work with a diverse team, enabling us to tap into perspectives and enhance our problem-solving proficiency.
Balancing Work and School:
Managing work responsibilities alongside an intensive MBA program can be overwhelming. However, finding a balance is possible with a few strategies:
Effective Time Management: Prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and create a schedule to allocate time to both work and course-related activities.
2. Utilize Online Resources: Take advantage of online platforms and resources provided by the business school to facilitate learning at your own pace.
3. Seek Support and build networks with classmates who are going through a similar experience, as they can provide valuable support.
4. Communicate with Employers: Maintaining open communication with employers and discussing your academic commitments can help ensure they are aware of your obligations and support your education.
Conclusion:
The intensive weeks have undoubtedly been challenging, but it was a transformative experience. Balancing the workload of four courses while managing work demands required discipline, effective time management, and support from my employer. However, the knowledge gained and personal growth achieved made it all worthwhile As I move forward in my MBA journey, I am confident that I can successfully manage both work and school by employing the strategies I have learned.
