Can I expect change by starring at my mirror?

Written by Toro-Obong Udoh · 2 min read >

One of the basic items in the home of the average human is a mirror. It is a seemingly negligible item yet its absence is always felt heavily. After dressing, we spend hours evaluating and re-evaluating our appearance with a desire to look our best. This routine is forged by the desire to impress others or simply look our best. Nonetheless, no matter how long we stare at the mirror at home, there is little or no change we can make to our baseline features. However, there is a mirror that can change our appearance – the mirror of God’s Word.

2nd Corinthians 3:18 states – “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” From this piece of scripture, we see two differences between God’s Word and our conventional mirror. First, the Word reflects God’s glory and not our image. Second, God’s Word has the ability to change us, enabling us to look more and more like God.

When you look at the mirror in your bathroom, you expect to see your image and then make necessary adjustments. However, in the case of God’s Word, you see God’s glory and then you begin to adjust yourself to meet His requirements. Jeremiah 1:5 clearly mentioned “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations”. From here, we see that God had a plan for our lives before He created us and when we come face to face with God’s Word we begin to understand His purpose for our lives. Romans 8:30 – “Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”

Also, God’s Word has the capacity to change us. Romans 12:2 states “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Imagine the power in God’s Word? It can renew your mind. We also know from Proverbs 4:23 – “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” If we can change our minds, we can change our lives. God’s Word can change our lives for God.

Can you trust God’s Word? Of Course you can. Psalm 138:2 is clear – “I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” Have you have ever seen a miracle via the use of God’s name? Has the name of God or His Son opened doors for you? Then you can be sure that God’s Word is dependable. He has exalted His Word above ALL His name. Whether you want to call Him Elohim, Jireh, Jehovah or what have you, His Word is above that.

Knowing this, let us seek His Word, align with it and submit ourselves to its demands. By doing this, our lives will improve: “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day”- Proverbs 4:18
