EGWU IMO AWKA FESTIVAL (MY HERITAGE)

Written by Ebelechukwu Nkadi · 2 min read >

The Imo Awka festival is an annual event that occurs in Awka, which is the capital city of Anambra State in Nigeria. The festival is celebrated by the Awka people in honor of their ancestors and deities.

During the festival, various traditional rites and rituals are performed, including masquerade dances, processions, and sacrifices. The festival is also marked by the wearing of colorful conventional attire, drumming, singing, and feasting.

The Imo Awka festival holds significant importance in the cultural agenda of Awka, as it serves as a medium to safeguard and showcase the cultural legacy of the community. It also attracts tourists and visitors from far and wide who come to witness and participate in colorful and vibrant celebrations.

As a child, I looked forth to the Egwu Imoka festival. I remember then how masquerades will chase us around, it is taboo for a female to see this masquerade without running to hide. On the day of Imoka proper, My Dad will take us to the major road where we sit to view the beautiful festival. It is a beautiful one indeed. I remember how we use to see the women adorned on white wrappers (EZENWANYI), dancing gracefully to appreciate the gods of our land.

In the capital city of Anambra state, Egwu Imo Awka is the most celebrated festival. On the fifth day prior to the Egwu Imo Awka, which is the primary day of the festival celebrating women (Ezenwanyi) with a procession from Amaenyi to Umuokpu, Awka, and often coinciding with Nkwo Market Day, all shops close as part of the festival’s observance. The Eze Imoka, who acts as an intermediary between the Imo Awka deity and the traditional Awka people, plays a crucial role in driving the Imo Awka festival forward.

The festival comprises four significant events: ede-mmuo, ogwu oghugha, egwu Opu-Eke, and Egwu Imo-Oka. Egwu Opu Eke is a vibrant cultural dance performed by female devotees of the Imo-Oka shrine, including priestesses and regular women adorned in vivid attire, who dance in the marketplace to honor the deity presiding over the shrine.

During the festival, the city is alive with the sound of music, drumming, and dancing. The streets will be booming in a celebratory mood with vendors of colorful fabrics, beads, and other traditional items. Kids are not left out as they dress up their own masquerade for this celebration.

Among the delightful aspects of the festival are the masquerade dances, which feature groups of men and women wearing intricate masks and costumes. These masquerades are thought to embody the spirits of ancestors and deities, and their dances aim to gratify and pay homage to these spirits.

The dances are accompanied by traditional music, which is played on a variety of instruments, including drums, flutes, and xylophones. The music is rhythmic and lively, and it is impossible not to be swept up in its energy. The dancers move in sync with the music, their colorful costumes swirling around them as they perform intricate steps and movements.

The Imo Awka festival is not just a beautiful spectacle but also an important cultural event that helps preserve and promote the Awka cultural heritage. The festival is a time when the community comes together to share its traditions and customs, to remember the past, and to celebrate the present.

Overall, the Imo Awka festival is a beautiful and vibrant display of the Awka people’s cultural heritage. The festival is a time of joy, celebration, and reverence, and it is a must-see event for anyone interested in experiencing the rich and diverse culture of Nigeria. The beauty of the Imo Awka festival lies not only in its colorful displays and live music but also in the sense of community and shared history that it embodies.
