Uneasy, they say, lies the head that wears the crown. This is the case of all and sundry who has the responsibility to lead a group of people. Leadership refers to the art of guiding and motivating a group of individuals towards a common goal. As a leader, one is expected to set direction, inspire others and ensure that everyone is working together effectively. Undoubtedly, some people are born with natural leadership abilities while others develop their skills through training, experience and practice.

Effective leadership becomes crucial in any organisation whether it is a small or a large corporation for success to be recorded. A good leader can inspire employees to work harder, boost morale and foster a positive work culture. Conversely, a poor leader can demotivate employees, create a toxic work environment and ultimately harm the organisation’s success. However, to become a good leader, it takes a lot. There are a few key traits that many successful leaders possess and they include, vision, communication, decisiveness, empathy, accountability, etc.

For someone to be regarded as a good leader, such an individual has to possess a good vision. A good leader has a clear vision for the future and communicates it effectively to his team. They understand where they want to go and have a plan for how to get there. In the same vein, they are good when it comes to communication. Communication is seen as one of the most important skills a leader has to possess. They need to be able to convey their ideas clearly and effectively to their team, as well as listen to feedback and concerns from their team members.

Leaders must be able to make tough decisions quickly and confidently. They should weigh all the options and information available to them, but not be afraid to take risks when necessary. They must have the ability to analyse situations and weigh their pros and cons and eventually make decisions that are in the best interest of the organisation. Generally, they should be able to make decisions in a haste, have a mind of their own and be firm regardless of whatever decision they take. They must also bear in mind that they would be responsible for the outcome or outcomes of the decision taken.

Furthermore, good leaders are able to put themselves in their team members’ shoes and understand their perspectives. They should be approachable and willing to listen to feedbacks and concerns from their employees. Before anyone can be certified a good leader, it is imperative that they are selfless, accommodating and approachable. A peevish or rude individual would not fit well as a leader, it is like putting a square peg in a round hole.

Moreover, leaders are expected to be accountable. They take responsibility for their actions and the actions of their team as well. They are willing to admit when they have made a mistake and take steps to correct it. When you see people who run away from accountability or are not always ready to admit their wrongs, they are not fit to be leaders.

In conclusion, leaders are not just chosen for aesthetics, they are selected or elected because they serve as the light which guides the path of others. When leaders possess the right qualities, they do not only achieve results, they create a sense of purpose, meaning and fulfilment for their team and stakeholders.
