Ever stumbled upon a drug-addict? Ever considered the eternal drunk? Or the sex-addict? What are they searching for? Or rather what were they looking for that landed them where they are? If we look critically, they were searching for a form of love, acceptance and satisfaction in their soul. There is a void that exists in the heart of every human, designed by God and only He can satisfy it.
Many have tried to fill that void with various activities such as sex, drugs and even alcohol. However, what was setup in eternity cannot be nulled in time. The first day you used another means to quench the thirst of your soul, you found a temporal relief. However, you would later discover more and more of these substances will be required to attain the same level of insignificant comfort. Hormones have now been induced and an addiction is now formed. At this stage, your will-power is useless. Remember when you started? You decided when to start and when to stop, but now it seems you are powerless against your desires.
Seeing this, how can we address addiction? Yes, we have made advances in science and technology. Therapy and re-habilitation centers are also a good way to start. However, the only potent way is to turn to the one who can fill that void. The creator Himself, for it is written – they looked up to Him, and their faces were enlightened and His people shall never be ashamed – Psalm 34:5.
How does God treat addiction? First, He will renew our mind by His word. Romans 2:2 – And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. The Word of God can purify us from addiction. Ephesians 5:6 also points the washing capability of the Word of God. It says “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word”.
Asides the Word, God also changes our hearts. Due to variety of reasons, God would change our heart. Ephesians 11:19 – 20 reads “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh:That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God”. So that heart that is bent on drugs, focused on alcohol can actually be replaced by God and the stronghold of darkness can be broken.
Lastly, He breaks addiction by giving us more hunger for Him. “O God, thou art My God; early will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary”. – Psalm 63:1-2. Since He was the one that created us and not we ourselves, He alone has the ability to satisfy the thirst in our soul.
In conclusion, do not seek from other sources, that which you can get from God. It can tarry but wait for it, it will surely come to pass.
