THE EXECUTIVE GUIDE TO BETTER LISTENING

Written by Halimatu Adams · 2 min read >

How to identify bad listeners.

from my previous writing we have established that effective communication is an essential part of daily life, and listening is a critical aspect of communication. However, not everyone is a good listener. Bad listeners can cause misunderstandings, frustration, and even conflict. In this article, we will explore some common signs of bad listeners and how to identify them.

  • The opinionator don’t listen with open minds but primarily because they want to determine if your ideas conform with what they already believe to be true.
  • The grouch are listeners who are blocked by a feeling of certainty that your ideas are wrong.
  • The preamble uses questions to steer discussion or generate a desired answer.
  • The perseverator tend to talk a lot without saying anything. Their comments and questions don’t advance the conversations.
  • The answer man brings solutions even before a count on the problems. They are desperately eager to impress and please.
  • The pretender fakes engagement and even agreement but are not interested in what you are saying/have made up their minds.

In addition to these, i would like to hight few signs to also look out for

  1. Interrupting:

Interrupting is a common sign of a bad listener. Interrupting shows a lack of respect for the speaker and can disrupt the flow of the conversation. Bad listeners may interrupt to interject their own ideas, thoughts or opinions or because they are impatient to speak. This can be especially problematic when the speaker is sharing important or sensitive information.

  1. Fidgeting:

Fidgeting is another sign of bad listeners. Fidgeting can be a sign of boredom, discomfort, or disinterest in the conversation. Bad listeners may shift their weight, tap their feet, play with their hair, or engage in other distracting behaviors that can take attention away from the speaker. This behavior can be especially problematic during long or complex conversations, where the speaker needs the listener’s full attention.

  1. Nonverbal Cues:

Nonverbal cues can be a good indicator of whether someone is a good listener. Bad listeners may avoid eye contact or appear distracted. They may also look at their phones, check the time or engage in other activities that show a lack of engagement in the conversation. These nonverbal cues can be especially frustrating for the speaker and can make them feel like they are not being heard.

  1. Repeating the Same Thing:

Bad listeners may repeat the same thing over and over again. This can be especially problematic when the speaker is trying to communicate something important or complex. It can make the speaker feel like the listener is not paying attention or does not understand what they are saying. This behavior can also lead to frustration and conflict.

  1. Not Asking Questions:

Bad listeners may not ask questions or seek clarification. This can be especially problematic when the speaker is presenting new or complex information. Not asking questions can make the speaker feel like the listener is not engaged or does not care about what they are saying. It can also lead to misunderstandings or miscommunications.

  1. Changing the Subject:

Bad listeners may change the subject of the conversation. This can be especially frustrating for the speaker, who may feel like their point is being ignored or dismissed. Changing the subject can also disrupt the flow of the conversation and lead to confusion or misunderstandings.

  1. Being Judgmental:

Bad listeners may be judgmental or critical of the speaker. This can make the speaker feel defensive or attacked, and can lead to conflict or hurt feelings. Being judgmental can also make the listener appear closed-minded and unapproachable.

In conclusion, bad listeners can be identified through their interrupting behavior, fidgeting, nonverbal cues, repeating the same thing, not asking questions, changing the subject, and being judgmental. It is important to be aware of these signs of bad listeners, both in ourselves and in others, so that we can work to improve our communication skills and build stronger relationships with those around us. Being a good listener is a skill that can be developed and improved over time, and by being mindful of our own listening behaviors and working to improve them, we can become better communicators and build stronger connections with others.

Thanks until next time.
