The Journey into Financial Analysis Continues

Written by Oyeladun Aremu · 2 min read >

My journey into Financial Analysis began when I started studying and analyzing Financial Statements. At first, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of figures and how they were being computed and represented. But as I delved deeper, I began to appreciate the true financial representation of businesses through these statements.

Studying at Lagos Business School exposed me to a diverse group of individuals who brought unique perspectives from different fields. Together, we worked as a team, harnessing our strengths and overcoming our shortcomings. As we analyzed financial data, the scattered figures began to make sense, and I gained a deeper understanding of how to interpret and draw conclusions from financial representations.

The courses in Accounting and Finance were always my favorite as I marveled at how such complex financial data could be distilled into meaningful insights. The knowledge I gained from these classes is now being put into practice as I analyze financial problems in real-life business scenarios.

Reflecting on my learning journey, I am beginning to see how I can ensure that the businesses I have access to or advise on are profitable. I have gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of having a structured repayment plan before taking a loan for consumption and not for business purposes.

Recently, a close friend of mine expressed an interest in starting a school, and I was able to offer valuable insights on how to put the right financial structures in place before starting the business. Using an example from one of the course materials, I broke down how to go about with assets, liability, inventory, and other financial considerations. It was fulfilling to see my friend value my opinion and advice.

In another instance, I was able to help a struggling business owner differentiate between financial and operational processes. She was mixing family expenses with those of the business, and it was affecting her profitability. I advised her to set aside a fraction of the business as her salary and use it to sort out her home expenses without taking from the business. It was a lightbulb moment for her, and it felt good to have made a positive impact.

My personal journey through the Financial Analysis course at Lagos Business School has been transformative. I have always been fascinated by numbers, but this course has opened my eyes to a whole new world of financial analysis. Through my studies, I have come to appreciate the importance of analyzing financial statements and how it can be used to make sound financial decisions.

As I continue with the course, I am eager to delve deeper into the world of financial ratios. While the formulas can be a bit difficult to remember, I am confident that with continued assignments and group work, I will gain a better understanding of this crucial aspect of financial analysis.

Looking back on my experience, I am grateful for the exposure and knowledge that I have gained. Prior to taking this course, I would simply flip through financial documents without truly understanding their details. Now, I am equipped with the skills and knowledge to thoroughly analyze financial statements, enabling me to make informed decisions about businesses I am involved in or advise on.

Overall, my time at Lagos Business School has been a true transformational experience. While I still see myself as a work in progress, I am excited about the potential impact I can make with the knowledge and skills I have gained through this course. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow, both personally and professionally, through future courses and experiences.
