Excerpts from The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

The satirical novel by C.S Lewis contains a series of letters from a Screwtape, a senior demon to his nephew, Wormwood, a junior tempter. The letters provide advice on how to lead a human soul away from God and towards hell. It explores the nature of temptation, sin, and human frailty. Some of the key themes include the importance of a free will, the dangers of materialism and selfishness, and the power of love and forgiveness. The novel also highlights the absurdity and hypocrisy of certain human behaviours, as seen through the eyes of the demons. Ultimately, the book is a warning against the spiritual dangers of succumbing to temptation and the importance of remaining steadfast in one’s faith.

. The power of temptation – Pleasure and comfort can be used by the tempter to lead human beings away from their faith. According to Screwtape ‘Never forget that when we are dealing with any pleasure in its healthy and normal and satisfying form, we are, in a sense, on the Enemy’s ground.’

·  The importance of free will: Because God has given humans the power of choice which free will epitomises, it behoves humans to make a choice to follow their faith or succumb to temptation. Free will make it difficult to lead humans astray accidentally.

·  The dangers of materialism: the urge for material possession can also be used to lead humans away from their faith. According to Screwtape ‘Desire for a better social status is a good tool to distract the human from his spiritual well-being.’

·  The power of love and forgiveness: since love and forgiveness can be used to strengthen the human’s faith, temper should ensure humans do not love and forgive one another.

·  The role of faith and prayer: In one letter, Screwtape advises Wormwood to use distractions and doubts to prevent the patient from engaging in prayer and maintaining his faith. Since prayer is a powerful weapon against temptation, the enemy uses distractions and doubts to prevent humans from engaging in prayer and maintaining their faith. It also uses distractions

·  The absurdity of human behaviour: Helping humans to harbour hypocrisy and absurdity of certain human behaviours such as selfishness, vanity, and lack of humility is a good way to lead humans astray.

·  The consequences of sin: making light of the consequences of sin can be used to lure humans away from their faith. According to Screwtape ‘Prosperity knits a man to the world. He feels that he is finding his place in it, while really it is finding its place in him.’ Similarly, pride can be used to lure humans away from their faith.

·  The nature of evil: Evil can be subtle and insidious by nature and manifestation, small distractions and temptations can gradually lead the human away from his faith.

·  The importance of self-reflection: if humans can make a habit of reflecting on their own behavior and be aware of their own weaknesses and vulnerabilities, it can be a pathway to overcome distractions, temptations and consequences of since. Such reflections require the interplay of intellect that collects, analyses and process situations, will that help with choices and emotions that expresses the outcomes of such choices.

·  The power of language: Language is a powerful tool to shape our perceptions and beliefs, and it can be used to manipulate and deceive, confuse and mislead people.
